It’s always a nice surprise when I run into a familiar face in the Yeerk Pool that I actually want to see.
“Ill – Iniss!” Derane0 said, correcting xyrself before using my Peace Movement alias in public. Xyr feel-fields flickered with excitement. “Hey, do you want to, uh. Find a spot?”
Xe meant, find a spot to hang out in private and talk about revolutionary activities. But I was tired, so tired, after a day at the school and then grading and then endless administrative meetings at the Sharing and then finding moments to pass secret messages to the Peace Movement. Derane0 wasn’t a poolie, so surely we could meet outside the Pool to deal with Peace Movement business.
“I think I’d rather just relax,” I said. “What’s going on in the Pool this rane, Derane? Nothing official, just... what’s happening around here?”
“Okay,” Derane0 said slowly, xyr feel-fields calming to a low, considering hum. “The Shakdap spawning just started their formal education. The grubs are very excited. Oh, there was a filtration failure in the Taxxon drinking pit earlier today. The water got disgusting, tasted like licking a rock. We’ve been complaining about it, but no one ever takes the Taxxons seriously...”
“I know, right?” I said. “I remember when the water in the voluntary area started tasting funny, and Tidwell and the others had to complain for a week to get those cheap bastards to install a filter.”
“We’re Yeerks,” Derane said. “If we can’t assure water quality, who can?”
Just another day in the Grash Akdap Pool. Even such a terrible place as this had a routine, had mundane concerns. I didn’t have to think about life and death problems all the time.

i decided i'd read The Departure at about 2 am so by the time i finished i was in a fever dream like state as i forced myself to stay awake to finish. cassie's nothlit status reversing due to the "natural morphing" of caterpillar to butterfly was kinda cool but it felt like a cop out at the same time. also i'm bummed that we don't really know what happened to aftran besides that she let karen go? (until later, but i'm trying to pretend like i dont know what's gonna happen in the later books) for all we know, aftran wormed away and yeerked herself into like a deer or something. but this is why i appreciate @c-rowlesdraws 's aftran au. that's the good stuff right there
also: i still managed to get really heated over cassie letting a yeerk into her brain despite knowing the outcome lmao. i love you cassie but good god girl. but, ka applegate is really good at emphasizing the stress and tension in a situation and this is why we stan
