So the fish earrings are the cause of the issue with the “leak” to give them away, but it’s actually because the piercing was done on such an impulse that he just picked anywhere and the earring is not good quality so his ear is swollen and painful and ZZ says they should swap it out for a different one so he brought a selection of his over to pick from and the fish earrings is unique. Honestly, when I read that part in the book I was like, why don’t you literally explain it that he had a sore ear and borrowed an earring from a co-worker/friend, would that be that weird? I feel like a lot of times in shows/movies, maybe it’s cultural, but they have a lot of things where just explaining a situation with context would be better than trying to make up something to cover it up.
