Sooo it was a lil complicated to explain in just a few scenes but basically, in this story Henry is Will’s real father, and he’s the one who helped Joyce get into high society, except the cost of that was literally people’s lives (you can see the missing persons headlines in the newspapers). But ofc Henry has money and influence to make those things happen without trouble. He only sees people as pawns he can manipulate, gets rid of the ones who become a problem and replaces them. His whole generosity and love for Joyce was just a facade. Joyce eventually figured it out and ran away from him for years, then married Hopper (who already had Jane) and tried to move on. But Henry came back, obviously, he wasn’t done playing his little games and wanted his son at all costs. And he had every means to threaten them : pinning those disappearances on Joyce, exposing her origins, or even revealing Will and Mike’s relationship. And we know well what would be the consequences of such a scandal. So Will, caught between love and duty, decided he wants to protect people he loves and left with him. Henry’s whole goal was just to keep this cycle of power and manipulation going, get rid of anyone who interferes and use Will as his personal spy.
