Documentation of Michelle Grabner, B. Wurtz at Laurel Gitlen, New York is featured on Contemporary Art Daily.
What to give the artist in your life: The @artnet Holiday Gift List for Artists, 2020, includes:⠀ ⠀ B. Wurtz: Pan Paintings, "a boon to the spirit."⠀ Delight just about anyone with B. Wurtz’s iconic “pan paintings”—radiant acrylic works that use aluminum baking pans and takeout containers as their canvases. This 104-page book compiles three decades’ worth of these metamorphosed vessels and includes an essay by art historian and curator @ecooke310⠀ Published by @hunterspointpress⠀ ⠀ The New Woman Behind the Camera, "a groundbreaking look at women photographers."⠀ Focusing on the many ways women have influenced and informed modern photography, this survey of work by 120 photographers is a richly illustrated corrective to the art historical canon. Get it before it’s gone.⠀ Published by @ngadc / @delmonico_books⠀ ⠀ Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power, "A visual history of Black Power"⠀ This important catalog documents one of the best shows of the last few years. 'Soul of a Nation,' which was mounted at six major museums including @tate & @brooklynmuseum celebrates Black artists working in the crucial, politically charged years of 1963 to 1983. The tome gathers powerful, passionate works by titans like Howardena Pindell and Charles White—many of whom are only just now getting their due.⠀ Published by @tate & D.A.P.⠀ ⠀ Als recommended: A subscription to expertly curated literature via @primaryinfo⠀ ⠀ Read more via linkinbio.⠀ ⠀ @bwurtz4 #bwurtz #newwomanbehindthecamera #soulofanation @markgodfrey1973 @zoe.whitley ⠀ https://www.instagram.com/p/CIyBz1opi8R/?igshid=1eatjh12d2oxz
Rethink Thanksgiving! Featured spreads are reproduced from' B. Wurtz: Pan Paintings,' a new release from @hunterspointpress collecting 70 out of more than 500 abstract paintings made by the artist on disposable aluminum roasting pans and to-go containers since 1990. Essayist @ecooke310 writes, "In salvaging these throwaway pans for works of art, @bwurtz4 underscores the American tradition of making do with what we have by investing in quotidian items—of drawing out their life-affirming qualities. While his application of bold color vivifies the industrial templates—and, in turn, the anonymous designers behind them—there is equal vitality in the act of viewing these Pan Paintings in substantial groupings on the gallery wall or in the pages of this book. The variety of sizes and shapes in aluminum pans, from small circles to large ovals and perfect squares to subdivided rectangles, registers the breadth of contexts in which such containers might appear: single-serve TV dinner, backyard barbecue, Thanksgiving potluck, restaurant delivery, unfussy wedding buffet, leftover lunch at work, book-club spread, or church-basement support gathering. Whether providing food for one or many, in public or in private, these containers attest to daily nourishment; their capacity to also exist as ready-made abstractions reminds us that art partakes in such everyday sustenance, deepening our access to body and soul—and to each other."⠀ ⠀ Read more via linkinbio -- and happy holidays!⠀ ⠀ #bwurtz #panpaintings #thanksgiving #roastingpan #hunterspointpress https://www.instagram.com/p/CID8tU-JfVr/?igshid=gyerxyy693gx

Pretty hot. We’re reposting these photos of ‘B. Wurtz: Pan Paintings’ from @hunterspointpress publisher @bkulok - releasing September 2020 and already a big staff favorite. Pre-order now or take your chances! For nearly five decades New York-based artist B. Wurtz (born 1948) has transformed humble materials and discarded objects into humorous and wryly beautiful works of art. This full-color, Swiss-bound monograph focuses on the artist’s iconic series of “pan paintings” made on disposable aluminum roasting pans and to-go containers. In 1990, Wurtz discovered patterns stamped in the bottom of these mass-produced products and grasped their potential as “readymade abstract paintings.” In the three decades since, he has worked across a wide variety of pan shapes and sizes, applying dazzling combinations of color using the patterns as predetermined compositions. Pan Paintings provides the first overview of the various permutations in color and shape that comprise this long-term series. The book includes an essay by art historian and curator Erica Cooke which considers this critically acclaimed body of work and its deep entanglement with the craft-oriented ethos and amateur culture of postwar America. @ecooke310 @bwurtz4 #bwurtz #panpaintings https://www.instagram.com/p/CDzL9VaJ65u/?igshid=1w3jthjn84p14
