The Trash That Outlives the Bug
Insects are disappearing. Plastic is not. Dutch artist Henk Loorbach noticed this grim trade-off and did something quietly devastating with it: he started building bugs from the stuff that’s replacing them. His series Litterbugs transforms beachcombed bottle caps, fishing line, and stray straws into fragile, eerily convincing insect sculptures. The pieces don’t try to hide what they’re made…
one of the things ive picked up from the forest. from what i can tell, it was a glass project- something like a cup or jar from the shape and one open end- that was scrapped and partially melted down, but was never fully melted and repurposed. i might use it in a project in the future but honestly i really like it how it is right now
The 2025 Trash Book is FINISHED! Every year I fill a handmade sketchbook with scrap paper to explore, experiment, and play with mixed media. Certain Patron tiers get the digital download for free and I'll be sharing select pages soon. The only way to see all 60+ pages, artist statements, and materials list is to get the digital download, COMING SOON!
