If you think I am of the opinion that BvS is a colossal failure of a film and a failure of storytelling because of characterisation you are just so unbelievably wrong wow.
I could know nothing about the characters therein and I would still really dislike it because the problems I find with it are structural, thematic and scripted. It doesn't need to be about Batman fighting Superman for that to be true.
Furthermore, anyone who's main argument for BvS being bad is that 'Superman would never' or 'Batman would never' or 'Lois Lane would never' or 'Lex Luthor would never' isn't actually upset at having watched a bad film. They're upset that the versions of the characters they see on screen don't line up with their personal interpretation of the characters, which is a valid reason not to like a film on a personal level but it's lightyears away from being a valid reason to bill the film as 'objectively bad'. BvS owes nothing to the comic book versions or to any other versions of these characters, it's trying to be its own thing.
This thing people do where they get possessive of their favourite characters and how they think they should be is killing a lot of reasonable criticism within nerd circles (not using 'nerd' as a pejorative but as a wider umbrella than 'fandom' that can encompass people who are into their shit on their own time and without fandom influence) as people fail to look past the knee jerking response to hate anything that tells them their fav doesn't have to be the way they've imagined them.
Basically - character is a fine measure of how much you enjoyed a film but it's rarely got much to do with whether or not a film works. And when you're watching to see when people go off model with your fav character rather than for how this version of a character fits into the story currently being told, you are going to start taking it personally when things don't go the way you want them to. It's not personal, it's just a new way of seeing them.
This absolutely applies to films otger than BvS, but boy had BvS been the worst example of it in recent years
