"Alfie" is a prolific 20th-century pop song that evolved into a respected jazz standard. Written in 1966 by the songwriting duo Burt Bacharach and Hal David, it was composed to promote the film of the same name starring Michael Caine.
Key Characteristics as a Jazz Standard
Structure: Unlike standard pop verse-chorus formats, "Alfie" is largely through-composed with a sophisticated, conversational flow. It is primarily performed as a ballad.
Harmonic Complexity: The song is known for its technical brilliance, featuring frequent chromatic movements, irregular phrase lengths (some measures feel like five or six beats over a 4/4 pulse), and unexpected transitions.
Musical Notation: It is a staple in the Jazz Real Book, a common resource for jazz musicians to learn chord progressions and melodies.
Notable Jazz Interpretations
Since its release, the song has been reimagined by numerous jazz icons:
Bill Evans: The legendary pianist recorded a highly regarded version of "Alfie," which is often cited as a definitive jazz instrumental interpretation.
Dionne Warwick: While her 1967 recording was a pop hit, her sophisticated vocal delivery made it a blueprint for jazz-pop vocalists.
Instrumentalists: Notable recordings include those by saxophonists Stan Getz and Roland Kirk, trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, and guitarists John Scofield and Barney Kessel.
Vocalists: Aside from Warwick, it has been performed by Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Johnny Mathis, and more recently, Stacey Kent.
Note on Related Works
While the Bacharach/David song is the famous standard, the 1966 film Alfie also featured an original instrumental score by jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, including the track "Alfie's Theme". Though separate from the Bacharach ballad, Rollins' work remains a significant jazz contribution related to the film.

Not sure if the people being identified in this picture are the people actually with Ethel; looks more like maybe Burt Bacharach on the right. 🤔. I’m no expert tho.
Dionne Warwick’s “Make Way for Dionne Warwick”
Released: August 31, 1964 Label: Scepter Producer: Burt Bacharach • Hal David ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Dionne Warwick is one of my favorite living legends. She’s had a career that has been active for GENERATIONS and that is so iconic to me! She comes from a family of iconic singers (Whitney Houston is her first cousin for heaven’s sake,) but Dionne’s voice was remarkable. Dionne is our first Black pop…
