New city, new fall. Same cold, same rain.
Six years since the dream of visits to LA blew away with dead leaves on the wind.
When the first round real of hope screeched to a halt and I called K on his way to work and he had to pull over because I was sobbing too hard to hear and the phone call was expensive.
New space, new bed. Same skin, same calluses.
One of the polaroids on my wall was never meant to be mine. But it sits next to its mate now and I get a longer snapshot of an old memory.
I catch myself forgetting and I canât remember if he drove me to the airport of if I took a cab. I beat myself up about it but to be fair, we hadnât really slept.
New friends, new hands to hold. Same scars, same dreams.
Fewer things make me cry now. I smile more at memories and it doesnât hurt like a wound now, it just aches like arthritis.
Iâm still going for it. And even if I forget some things in the moment, whatever was captured on camera can be recalled in streaming form with a few minutes on either side.
New love, new ambitions. Same mantra, same wishes.
My alarm still plays that shpongle song twice a day. I taught my lover how to make the chapstick sphere.
When I get too down I think about the ones who werenât as lucky. I think about Free Lessons and demand that I Carpe Awesome. I cheer myself on with Excelsior, Ever Higher, and on and on and on and on....

Fire Dancing, for Burning Dan
Dan Gordon-Levitt, also known as fire-dancer extraordinaire âBurning Dan,â passed away in early October. As a nod to Dan, who mentored me and countless other students, this Stuff We Like is about fire-dancing. Fire dancing's tribal origins (fire-dancers will often point to the New Zealand Maori people) syncretized with circus-style object manipulation and filtered through Burner culture to become a theatrical fire-based performance art. Fire-dancers use props with wicks built onâpretty much anything goes, from fans to staves to whipsâwhich are ignited and incorporated into dance or martial arts based performances. Why would someone take up fire-dancing? Well, good candidates include those who never thought themselves quite coordinated enough for dance or competitive enough for sports, yours truly included. And perhaps more importantly, being able to confidently manipulate fire led me to a can-do attitude about taking up new challenges. Something about ducking and dodging fireballs has had the unexpected effect of bringing more perspective and balance to my life.
