eyes   look   up   and   down   for   a   moment,   trying   hist   best   to   be   nonchelant   at   the   showcase   of   a   peak   of   skin   under   the   crop   top.   it's   subtle   really,   enough   for   him   to   linger   there   for   a   moment   before   he   is   reminded   that   yes,   he   should   be   answering   the   question.   "well,   that   depends,   how   long   you   want   the   date   to   last."   hwan   teases   in   turn,   approaching   jay   by   the   mirror   and   nestling   his   head   on   his   boyfriend'   shoulder,   hands   sneaking   around   exposed   waist.   "we   are   going   to   a   club,   you   should   wear   what   you   want   tonight.   i   certainly   don't   mind   touching   you   like   this."

His text messages had gotten shorter and more sporadic as the night wore on, which meant that either the date had gone terribly wrong or really well... and Zoey wasn't sure which direction she'd hoped for by the time she was standing outside his front door armed with two bags of junk food and snacks from the nearest convenience store and more beer than they should've felt comfortable selling to one person. She awkwardly knocked with one hand, trying her best to hold onto everything without dropping either of the bags and feeling self-conscious all at once when she realized he might be actively busy with someone else on the other side of the door. (if he was even home yet at all...)

She didn't know why she was holding her breath and didn't even realize she was doing it until she heard the click of the locks and the door slowly swung open to reveal a rather defeated looking Jay half-clad in sweatpants and clearly not expecting any additional company for the evening. Zoey's heart soared at the sight of him, bolstering her over performative cheerful smile as she raised both convenience store bags in his direction. "I have arrived to save the day! Er... evening I guess..." Zoey bit her lip, pushing in toward the door to invite herself inside as she slung one of the bags into Jay's chest for him to take off her hands. "Put those in the fridge, I got plenty..." Once she pushed her way inside, she did a quick sweep of his place, nearly on tip-toe as if she could see around corners and through walls to ensure (and console herself) that no one else was there. "Date ended early then, huh?"

the declaration leaves her a little too stunned to speak, his words taking a moment to fully settle in. the wrapped florals are still held up between them, his hands atop hers (she could feel the way his hands shook slightly as he spoke aloud, her heart swooping from his tone.) her shoulders drop a touch as she watches his expression with remorse.

hwa-young feels guilty. she's held that ever since she decided to stop their hookups after jay confessed to having sincere feelings for her that went past being friends. in her mind, it was for both of their sakes— an unexpected death was always waiting in the wings for any demon hunter, so she had resigned herself early on to a future like so, (ironic, as she strongly speaks up for her fellow hunter who decide to leave the life for a calmer one) and wanted to spare him from having to go through with that possibility. yet—

neither one strayed to far from the other, despite what was agreed. their work puts them in close proximity, but they still spent time together past that. she disappeared for a month on 'business' and he reassured her of all things when she felt somewhat slighted. he's confessed more than once about thinking of her or how he thought the world of her, even when she took a step back every now and then. even now, jay still puts his feelings on display for her to see.

perhaps it's the underlying frustration in his tone after time after time of him hoping.

the ringing in her pocket interrupts the moment. she knows what it's for and takes a hold of his wrist to keep him close as she answers it. ( "ah! finally! hwa-young-nim—!" )

"hyun is charge for the day. don't bother me until tomorrow evening." tucking away her phone, she still looks to jay but this time with a smile on her lips. "alright then, wonnie. what are we doing today then?"

It's   on   her.   She   had   been   inviting   him   around   to   kill   the   free   time.   Perhaps   it's   selfish   of   her,   but   he   seems   not   to   mind   spending   time   with   her   and   after   years   of   feeling   like   her   time   of   being   desired   as   a   woman   were   gone   (   it's   silly,   considering   she   is   still   young,   and   an   idol   for   many,   even   with   her   break   from   the   industry   ).   She   noticed   little   things   about   him   that   endear   him   to   her,   and   eventually,   on   a   day   when   the   food   was   gone   and   the   movie   wasn't   particularly   interesting,   his   lips   were   the   better   tasting   distraction.  

she's lost sense of which direction she was supposed to be turning. it doesn't help that her mind is racing a million miles an hour away from her. her thoughts are always a step ahead of her body. the stage outfit feels too tight, the microphone is in the way and the dim roar of the crowd from somewhere else in the building is present in her ears.

jay's hands on her shoulders are a welcome grounding force. sunhee raises a hand to them, grips her brother's fingers and squeezes tightly.
