Theatre Square, Chernivtsi, Ukraine. 3rd of September 2017.
Chernivtsi has a multicultural history: Jewish, Romanian and Austrian-Hungarian people have lived and shaped the face of the city, as have the Soviets and the Osman Empire. This Square used to be called Fish Square, then changed the name to Elisabeth Square during Austria-Hungary times, and during the Romanian occupation it was called Alexander Square. The figure in front of the theatre used to be one of the German poet Friedrich Schiller, now it depicts Olga Koblyanska, a Ukrainian writer and feminist from Chernivtsi.
The famous Vienna company Fellner & Helmer was commissioned with the design & building of the theatre. Because Chernivtsi took a long time to actually pay the company though, the architects sold their plans twice – and now there is the theatre in Fürth, Germany, that looks just the same.
There are a lot of stray dogs in Chernivtsi, and a lot of them choose the Theatre Square to sleep in. The flower beds are more comfortable than the streets :)
