A freshly molted cicada. We called them 'locusts' when i was a kid, after the insect characters from the Moses story, but real locusts are a grasshopper of sorts. Cicadas don't tend to be destructive to crops or anything, but they can emerge in alarming numbers sometimes. . Cicadas live underground for years, nibbling on the roots of trees, then they emerge from the ground, climb onto the nearest tree (or the tire of my jeep, whatever). Then their child exoskeleton cracks open between the shoulders and their winged adult form comes out. Some of them wait as long as 17 years for this moment, although not this green kind. For an hour or two after molting they are very soft and delicat and cannot fly or anything. And so some get eaten by birds.
