Summary:
âWhoâs Shawn Flynn?â âShawn is uh, Shawnâs the guy I was talking about last night.â Record scratch. Wait, what? Dad wasnât talking about Buck? Dad was going to date a guy who wasnât Buck??? What the fuck? Dad didnât notice Chrisâs internal freak out. He was too busy texting Shawn back. Chris twisted his crutch handles around and bit his lip. Last night, when he was tired and Dad was so nervous, Chris was ready to accept Dad dating again. But now? In the harsh light of day? When it was just some rando? Chris knew he had to step in and do something about this.

G | Buckley Diaz Family | Established Buddie | 1.1k | Buddie Week 2026 Day Three: Family Time | Abigail's back | @buddieweek911 |
Abigail looks anxious when Eddie glances at her in the rearview mirror.
Chris had been over the moon when she had sent them that Nevada postcard telling them that she was making her way back to LA, immediately telling Buck that he just had to make Bobby's lasagna for herâa request that Buck was more than happy to fulfill for Christopher despite his minor reluctance to let Abigail into their house following what had happened last year. Buck had grown fond of her almost immediately during that first dinner, just like Eddie figured he would once he let go of the last bits of his "she kidnapped Chris" hesitance, and getting to hear them trade stories about they're respective cross country drivesâand the odd jobs they each picked up along the wayâhas been a treat that Eddie hadn't realized he would love so much.
It's been about a three months since she came back from her road tripâthree months since Eddie and Buck offered her their spare bedroom for as long as she wanted itâand she's been settling in remarkably well, almost as if she was always meant to be a part of their family. The only struggle so far has been getting her to feel as if she's a real part of their family, and not an inconvenience that they've invited into their house out of pity. She'll join them for dinner every night, she'll tell them about what her hopes and plans are for the future, and she's even opened up to them more about how difficult things were with her parents, but when it comes to getting her to join them for outings with the extended 118 family, she refuses each time.
Beach trip with the Wilsons? She wants to stay home and mentally prepare for an interview she has later.
Dinner with the Nash-Grants? She has a pile of laundry she really wants to get to before it gets any bigger.
Go to the museum that she loved when Buck and Eddie took her and Chris a week after she started staying with them? Her eyes lit up with excitement until they mentioned that the Hans would be joining them, then she suddenly remembered she wanted to do research into some colleges in the area.
That's why when she agrees to go with them to Pepa's house for dinner it takes everything in Eddie and Buck to not react with visible surprise. She hadn't backtracked or changed her mind though, which leads them to now, all four of them standing on Pepa's porch, waiting for her to open up, Abigail half hiding behind Eddie like she's still contemplating turning back and waiting in the truck.
The door opens up not long after, revealing Pepa who greets them all with hugs and kisses, including Abigail, which seems to throw her for a loop if the way she glances between Buck and Eddie uncertainly is any indication. They smile back at her encouragingly, hoping Pepa's ever soothing presence will work some of it's magic on her.
"Look at you," Pepa tells her with a big smile, her hands gently holding onto Abigail's, "it's so nice to finally meet you."
"It's nice to meet you, too," Abigail replies, a soft smile settling on her face. Eddie watches as the tension slowly melts from her shoulders as Pepa drags her further into the house, words flowing from her in that oh so familiarly comforting way of hers. It reminds Eddie of the first few times he invited Buck with him to a family function, the way he had awkwardly hovered behind Eddie, holding Chris almost like a shieldâlike his very presence was an insult to the house he was standing inâuntil abuela took him by the hand and made him be her taste tester because she wanted a "fresh set of taste buds." Eventually, Buck stopped being worried that his presence wasn't wanted, and Eddie knows that with enough time and loveâwhich their family has no shortage ofâAbigail will get there too.
When they sit down for dinner a short while later, Abigail's looking more relaxed then she has since before she first agreed to come to Pepa's house. She's excitedly telling Pepa all about the week she spent in Chicago, pulling out her phone to show her the pictures she took at The Bean.
"Did you know the artist hates that people call it that?" Abigail has a wide smile on her face, happy to share her road trip tidbits with them. "It's technically named Cloud Gate, but I don't think anyone cares about it's actual name anymore."
"Maybe we should plan a family vacation to Chicago, that way we can all see it," Eddie suggests while Pepa flicks through Abigail's "Chicago" album.
"If we're gonna go on vacation anywhere it should be to Niagara Falls," Chris says, "Abigail said she didn't have time to head in that direction, that way it would be something new for all of us."
"You're right." Eddie points at Chris before gesturing between Buck and Abigail. "These two have an advantage, it's only fair for you and me that we go somewhere neither of them have been to."
"Y-you would take me on a family vacation with you?" Abigail's asks , her eyes wet, and for a second Eddie worries that they've made her uncomfortable, but he recognizes the look in her eyes. He's seen it beforeâin Buck's eyes, in his ownâit's the look of someone who's realized that maybe, just maybe, they've finally found the place where they belong, and the people who they can call their own. He opens his mouth to respond, to tell her that of course she'd go with them, but Chris beats him to the punch.
"Duh, you're kind of like my sister at this point, it'd be dumb to leave my almost sister home alone. You're not Macaulay Culkin." Chris shakes his head at the question he apparently finds utterly ridiculous.
The table is quiet for a moment, everyone letting Abigail sit with what must be a mix of emotions before she quietly breaks the silence. "Then yeah, I think Niagara Falls is a great idea."
"We'll start looking at tickets then," Buck promises, hiding the emotions that Eddie knows will burst from him as soon as they get behind the privacy of their bedroom door. Eddie reaches out to squeeze his hand, partly for Buck's sake, but also for his own because Eddie isn't faring much better in the emotional department himself.
Watching Abigail smile to herself, Chris happily munching on a tortilla next to her after having just indirectly called her dumb like a true little brother, something in Eddie settles as he realizes that maybe now Abigail will truly begin to accept her place in the 118 family. Maybe it won't take as much time as he thought.
