Buck comes over more often after that. More formally, though: dinner and wine. He quickly realizes he’s the only person from the 118 she’s spending time with. When Hen complains about Athena refusing to come to dinner, Buck bites his tongue. When Chimney says Athena shut the door in his face before he could even say a word, Buck says nothing. When the first Bachelor Monday rolls around and Buck realizes he’s seeing Athena more than her kids are, he feels a pang of guilt, but he still stays quiet. A sick, greedy sort of honor settles low in his stomach about being chosen. He’s not going to do anything that could fuck it up.
He needs to see her. She reminds him of Bobby. She was so much of Bobby’s life, his joy. This is who Bobby came home to after every shift. This is the life that Bobby built for himself out of nothing, out of ashes. Buck doesn’t deserve to slot into it, but cooking in Athena’s kitchen—seeing the look that comes into her eyes when he wears Bobby’s apron—is slowly starting to heal something inside of him. He can’t be Bobby, but he can slip his feet into Bobby’s too-big shoes and walk around a little if it will make Athena smile.

My old idea got to me again and I decided to write it. I'm sick so i haven't edited it at all
After barely making it out of the laboratory and almost losing two of his people to virus, 118-extended tended to get together and spend time in big group, sometimes eating and watching something but not talking — it was the hardest thing at the start — sometimes cooking together and joking around and sometimes — like right now — sitting at the table drinking wine and talking about anything and everything.
And Buck won't remember who started the sex talk first — they did drank a lot of glasses tonight — as he was mesmerized by Tommy in dim lights, trying hard not to sit on his ex's laps and kiss him like the man dying without water and Tommy being huge clean water river, but then Eddie was saying —
"I don't believe Buck is so big to be called firehouse. It's him being too arrogant."
"Oh he is," comes the answer from two people. And if Tommy saying it raises no questions the other person gets all the head moving to look at her.
Bobby the one to ask the question in high voice and paling and blushing at the same time, "you slept with Buck?"
Athena merely shrugs, "It was before you, Bobby. And I was soon-to-be-divorced from a gay man. I wanted a good night for myself and Buck is a good flirt when he wants to be."
She cheers her glass to him and Buck sheepishly raises his, "I'd say I wasn't the one flirting much that night. You were more than set on showing who's in charge."
Athena smirks.
"Why have I found out only now?" Hen asks Athena.
"Because I was not interested in bringing that I slept with basically my colleague twenty years younger than me during the me and Michael trying to understand what to do next. And," Athena bites her lip, "it was right before May's attempt. I wasn't thinking about Buck or this night it gossiping about this night."
"And then I was with Abby," Buck adds, "and soon Athena and Bobby started dating. And with all the respect, but I doubt me and Athena could be more than hook up after bar."
"There's so many thing I seemed not to know about you," Tommy says with strange look in his eyes.
Like Buck knows much about him.
"Just don't add Athena in the list of people I harbor feelings to, please. If something add Ravi to it," he cuts much to Ravi's big eyes and then smirk with a playful kiss.
"I'm open to experimenting."
"Sorry, Ravi, I'm not. Serious or nothing."
The talk finally gravitates to another topic after and soon everyone decide to go home.
Buck the last one to order himself Uber as he was packing the food and then cleaning the dishes not letting Bobby or Athena do it as they cooked.
He is surprised to find Tommy still outside.
"You're, uh, still waiting?"
"Wanted to catch you. My last remark hasn't landed on you as I wanted it and I kinda figured maybe that's part of our problem sometimes. Not knowing important stuff and not seeing how our words land on each other."
"So, what do we do about it?" Buck asks, steeping closer to Tommy.
Tommy steps closer too.
"I'll say change the Uber to my address and let's sleep tonight cuddling and then talking over breakfast."
Hi, hello, I am very curious as to who is eating who out 👀
it's buckathena grief sex 👀
The way that Athena crawls on top of Buck reminds him of a panther: smooth and feline and predatory. He lets himself be devoured by her lips again, loses himself in it for a moment. He gets a hand between them and rubs his thumb over her clit a few times before slipping a finger inside. A pleased hum rumbles through Athena’s chest. She pulses around him and sinks down, forcing his finger further inside.
“Lube?” Buck asks. He has fucked more than a few older women—not just Abby—and he knows the drill by now.
Athena looks down, unamused. “Now, I know you can do better than that.”
She presses her thumb down on Buck’s lower lip, encouraging his jaw to fall open. His mouth waters and he can’t help his moan.
“Yeah. Yeah, I can- yeah.”
He slips his finger out and grabs her hips, carefully picking her up and putting her on her back next to him. He kisses down her body—smooth, warm skin that smells sweet and earthy, real. He spreads her legs and kisses up her thighs, looking up at her for approval. There’s an indulgent, almost amused look on her face. It reminds Buck of the way Bobby would look at him sometimes, when Buck would try every spice in the cabinet trying to figure out what ingredient he was missing in Bobby’s chili. Go on, kid, I believe in you. You’ll figure it out.
I'm sooo so normal about the buckthena fic I am going to sit here and vibrate about it all weekend
hehehe here's another little snippet
It doesn't happen the next time they see each other, but it does happen again. It happens again and again, and soon it starts happening every time he goes to her house. They still have dinner, but sometimes they fuck while their food simmers; Athena held tight in Buck’s arms, legs wrapped around his hips as he fucks her fast and hot against the smooth marble countertop. Sometimes he’s allowed to take off Bobby’s apron, but usually it’s left to hang between their bodies, like it could cover what they’re doing. Buck doesn’t mind. It’s the only time Athena keeps her eyes open.
They don’t talk about it. They should, probably. Definitely. If Bobby were here—and if he could get over the shock of Buck fucking his wife—he’d tell Buck that they need to talk about what they’re doing and why, and all of the things that they’re avoiding by falling into bed with each other.
But they don’t talk about it. And Buck doesn’t talk about it with anyone else either.
They ask about her, they wonder about her, they lament her avoiding them, and still Buck stays silent. If he couldn’t tell them he was seeing her before, he certainly can’t now.
“I'm taking care of her,” he wants to tell everyone.
“I'm taking care of her,” he wants to tell Bobby. “Just like you asked me to.”

After Bobby’s death, Buck goes speed dating only to very awkwardly end up across the table from Athena. He offers to leave, but Athena sighs and tells him to just stay and he does. They start talking about Bobby and not being able to move on, and before they know it, they haven’t moved on from each other. They end up going home together and grieving in the basest “we’re still alive” fashion, if you’re picking up what I’m laying down, lol. Horizontally.
I just think Buck ought to get a chance to be another cougar’s himbo as a treat, and Athena deserves a big strong firefighter in her bed (preferably Bobby… who she can’t ever have again. Buck’s as close as she’ll ever get now)
Bonus if they’ve got the “dad(gn) with a dog I say I don’t want but secretly love and spoil”/“stray puppy would do anything for a forever home” dynamic going on, on top of every complicated emotion between them about Bobby and who he was to them each.
