I always think about that post that goes something along the lines of "the biggest drawback to media analysis is people seeing shows/books/whatever as documentaries of fictional worlds" and it stands SO TRUE esp for the pjo fandom. I don't personally care much about the judo flip scene but annabeth antis who use it to prove that she's "abusive" immediately come to mind.
I truly truly do not think the judo flip scene was meant as anything but a way to make annabeth appear badass in a way that has aged poorly since moa came out. it isn't supposed to say anything substantial about her as a character, moreso make rick look more progressive and also serve as a kind of bland imitation of percy and annabeth's pre relationship banter. Compare it to, say, frank and leo's rivalry which was clearly written to showcase both their flaws (leo's insensitivity, frank's insecurities, etc.) That was simply not the intention with the judo flip scene, so I don't think its fair to use it as evidence of annabeth's alleged "abuse".

the serenamiette rivalry was never about ash but he was definitely supposed to contrast them both in his true confidence vs miette's false one and his drive and passion vs serena's aimlessness. They use him as a vessel to talk abt their own insecurities that are made worse when theyre threatened by each other. Which is so funny to me... there has never been anyone on the planet as bad at communicating as these two. Half of the conversations they have about ash are heavily layered to the point where you gotta ask "is this even about ash anymore" AND THEY NEVER ARE
