BUBBLEGUM OCTOPUS - CRITTERS (ALBUM REVIEW)
<a href="http://bubblegumoctopus.bandcamp.com/album/critters-2" data-mce-href="http://bubblegumoctopus.bandcamp.com/album/critters-2">Critters by Bubblegum Octopus</a>
you guys need to check out BGO's new record. it's literalLY my favorite thing he;s ever put out. honestly some of the most mind blowing and forward thinking orchestration i've ever heard EVER, if not from BGO himself, or from anyone recently. like what the fuck are you thinking matt? this shit is insane. this record is NOT for everyone, you might be put off by how strange and at xome points unlistenable it is, but if you like to explore new creative, well constructed music, then you might be interesting in this GOLDMINE of creative and purely expressive thoughts, then you might want to check this out.Â
this record still might not be for everyone. a lot of people have criticism's on wether or not they likey like matt's singing, and i can understand why people might not like his falsetto melodies, but to be honest, they're just being pretentious. he's on tune, and he's such a creative vocalist to whom i look UP to. i would imagine somebody who was not farmiliar with bubblegum octopus' discography might think that there are multiple vocalists on the recordings, since his voice is capable of so much. at first, i was turned off by the screamy tone of his vocals, but he's sparing with it, and only uses it when it's absolutely necesary. i can say the same for everything else in matt's arsenal. the melodies, the ballads, the spurts of random white noise, the billowy sparkley sound effects, the heavy angry blas beats, everything is used sparingly and only pulled out when absolutely necessary. this record could have been twice as long with the same songs, and i dont think anyone would complain, but instead he cuts off many opf these songs before the two minute mark and by doing so, he really avoids parts being redundant, he makes you want to play songs over again, and the whole album dodes exaclty that, it maeks you want to play it OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. because once my favorite song is over, the next one is already half way thru and before i get the chance to re play my favorite song, its almost like i forget and get lost in the nest amazing tune, and i have to start the whole thing over cause its all done. like what the fuck?
I hope more people think this creatively when writing music because it's something that's really needed i think. creativity, balls, vulnerability, honesty, courage, and willingness to cut yourself off when things might get too redundant. you got to leave the people wanting more, and you got to impress or surprise them before you attempt to do so. i think these principles are applicable to any style of art if not music, and by paying close attention to "Critters" i think you can learn a lot. I don't want to sound like i'm kissing ass, but to me, kool skull, this album is a solid "10", not anything  i would say lightly, im sorry, but there really arent that many GREAT albums out recently. they're mostly just KINDA cool, or deent at best. if you don't see the value in this record, i hate to say it, but you probably aren't looking hard enough, and you're probably being very closed minded. that's okay, do your thing, have your opinion, but this record is for people that are looking to really learn something completely new about music.
OK maybe it's not all that "new' in comparison to his older stuff, i mean, there are reoccuring themes sonically, and lyrically that BGO fans might be familiar with, but to me, this album is a sort of "perfection" of those themes. song's like "no longer shine" feel like they could have been on "bad happy", but that's not a turn off for me, it's kind of something i can enjoy and be glad about. expecially since the songs before and after it are nearly unrecognizable and SEVERELY impressive.
go get it, buy it, buuy the cassette tape, buy the digital download, just get your hands on this bitch, and learn everything you possibly can from it, if not, blast it on the freeway and get hype as fuck.
