Chapter 3 - The tributes arrive in the Capitol, the lap of luxury and the heart of Panem. Vex is both dazzled and distraught. The city is more than he could have ever possibly imagined-- for better or for worse.

Vex opens his eyes slowly, reorienting to his environment one sensation at a time. 

He’s in bed. A bed far more comfortable than the hard mattress he’s known his whole life. 

There are numerous pillows pushed up around him, and blankets of different weights and textures. He’s hungry, but it’s a pleasant kind of hunger, the kind that looks forward to a meal, rather than begging for it, desperate and gnawing. 

It’s all so nice that, for a moment, he doesn’t question any of it, simply enjoying the comfort for what it is.

Then reality sets back in. 

The Capitol. He’s in the Capitol.

The reaping, Symmetry, the other tributes, the Hunger Games. 

Conduit. 

He sits up quickly, rubbing the scar between his thumb and forefinger. 

His chest hurts.

Chapter 5 - Individual assessments are over, tribute scores are in, and now Scar must face a new obstacle: An interview... on a smajor stage.

This part, at least, Vex is familiar with. The interviews—hosted by the renowned Scott Smajor—are an institution of their own, almost as anticipated an event as the Hunger Games itself. Brought up on stage, dressed in their stylist’s finest, and broadcast live, the event will be the tribute’s one and only chance to present themselves before the Capitol before they’re swallowed up by the arena. It’s during the interviews that tributes best catch the eyes of the sponsors—Capitolites with deep pockets, who will pay to send their favourites advantages into the arena.

Some of Vex’s earliest memories are of watching the tribute interviews. Too young to understand the gravity of the situation, he’d been captivated by the pageantry, the lights, the costumes, and the witty banter. Everyone on stage seemed delighted to be there, laughing and smiling from ear to ear, twirling to show off their outfits, and speaking highly of both the Games and the Capitol. 

As he’d grown older, the novelty of the showcase hadn’t diminished, but more and more he’d begun wondering how much of the broadcast was scripted and edited before it was broadcast out across the nation.

Now, he can say with confidence that the answer is: a lot.

Chapter 4 - Training for the tributes begins, preparing for both the Games and the skill presentation to the Gamemakers. Vex is out of his depth, and allies are harder to come by than he thought.

“More weapons?”

To her credit, Symmetry doesn’t startle, offering him a slight smile as she carefully retrieves several throwing knives from where she’d embedded them in the hard-packed material of a target board.

“Scalar thinks I have a knack for them,” she explains, her voice low. “She wants me to focus on weapons today—to give us an edge with the rest of the competition.”

For a while, Vex simply stands back and watches Symmetry continue with the throwing knives. She’s always been a quick study, but it’s even more evident now how committed she is once she sets her mind on a task. She’s relentless, sweat beading on her brow as she aims at the target, throw after throw.

Inspired by her devotion, he turns to look at the loaded racks of weaponry, grabbing a bow simply because it’s nearest.

It’s heavier than he expects, made of some sort of high-carbon metal that reminds him of the material they used in Three for making springs. The string is already taut, and it takes more effort than Vex expects to pull it back and keep it held in position. 

He thinks of Games from the past—of tributes he watched wielding bows. Using them to shoot and pick off other tributes like it was nothing.

Clearly they had far more practice than he ever will.

He likes this time of day most, when the sun has sunk to the lip of the horizon, turning the sky rust and purple and mauve. Soon, the light will deepen into dusk, and then the brightness of a hundred thousand lights will come alive to push away the night. Spot-lights and street lamps and the small red glows that mark the top of every smokestack. Everything the district needs to continue working. A beautiful, shimmering glow of productivity that radiates up, fanning out hazy and bright above them. 

“I’m excited,” he announces at last, the hum of the district making him feel too full to sit silently and brood with his friend. “I know you don’t want to hear it,” he adds before he can be interrupted, “But I’m looking forward to it. Once the reaping is over, I’ll finally be able to just enjoy it.” 

“You’re not supposed to enjoy it."

“I think you are,” he counters quickly. “I think that’s the point.”
