The Careers are much more cautious this time, approaching slowly and warning one another to be careful. Vex recognises them all at this point—Ennius and Galla from Two, and Cove, the remainder from Four, their numbers whittled down dramatically.
“What the hell is this?” Cove asks. He’s glaring up at Vex, who stands at the top of the ridge looking down at them. Safe from a grapple, but not from any weapon they might decide to launch his way.
It takes great effort to work past his nerves, but Vex pulls together all his courage and forces his face into a winning smile, spreading his arms wide in welcome.
“Why, it’s your lucky day!” he calls down, putting as much cheer and enthusiasm into his voice as he can. “And you’re just in time. As you can see, I’m having a fire sale.”

WHAT A RIDE ONCE AGAIN. Oh it hurts. That chapter to me was insane even more on emotional level - with sponsors actually going through helping Vex (or Scar already?..) several times. But in the END when it's life or death situation URGH -
Trying to do correct sizing in that perspective actually opened my eyes on how teriffying the fighting scene with golem was. Look at it IT'S HUMONGOUS. Poor Callaïs.

Ohhhhhhhhh I am OBSESSED with this. I love how well your illustrations are ingrained into the environments, and you have such an incredible grasp of scale and perspective!
Yet again, this is exactly how we imagined this scene. The dusty deserted look of the village, the unassuming golem (it's SO big- the idea of being attacked by that thing is terrifying), and I'm blown AWAY by how many tributes you designed and drew around the fountain. I love the design for their ponchos especially. And Vex (Scar!!!), lording over it all! I love his grinning, relaxed pose (his grey skin ahhhhhhhh our boy is going through it :((, facing down Callaïs. Symmetry about to spring into action, too. It's sooooo cool aaaaa every time I look at this I see more things I adore.

Pathetically, his thoughts drift to District 3. To the smokestack towers and the hulking shapes of the factories he’d looked out at from his perch on the abandoned church wall above their neglected cemetery. It’s not a place he ever thought he’d be nostalgic for, but he wishes he could go back there. Wishes he had hope for a future where he could ever possibly see it again.
He’s not aware of the parachute until it lands beside him, arriving silently and without fanfare. An unassuming tin container protected within a glass sphere that reminds him of the balls their names were drawn out of during the reaping.
He hopes Symmetry notices it. Hopes that whatever’s in it gives her the leg-up she needs to win.
He closes his eyes again and thinks of District 3’s skyline—the way the sunset looked against the towers, with their little blinking lights—wishing he had a better memory to feel like home.

THAT'S why I refer to her as her being from Warhammer 40k lore - hopefully @uhohbestie kinda can see the vision now as well! HEAVILY inspired by Golden Throne and the Emperor of Mankind by vibes AND by lore it kinda fits - humanity as a whole worshipping him not knowing whether he's still alive or not.
Was a super challenging one to draw as well! Fun fact: background was fully done and finished and then straight on REDONE in under 1 day cuz it was super meh. So blender my beloved came to save me once again with those massive walls and windows and simplified the process as much as it could.
Quick small bonus:
I just can not put Grian (and Xel now) in calm situations now can I. Though I wouldn't say he had any by that point of fic?? Wuhuh??
Oh my god, I can't get over how well you beam straight into our minds when you draw these scenes. I LOVE how intimidating this all is, and how small it makes Grian look in comparison to the might of the President and the Capitol. (The President looks SOoooo intimidating, too. I love how the IVs and monitors make her look monstrous- it suits her perfectly.)
You have such an eye for colour, I love that about these illustrations. The aesthetic is impeccable. Grian's fancy little wings :') Kleitos' rigid posture. The intimidating design of the room. it's perfect. (I looooove how you drew Xel's hair, too. Oh Grian, you're in sooo far over your head hahah aaaaaaa).

Unsubtly, Grian is yanked into the room as soon as the doors are opened, trying not to shrink from the President’s discerning gaze, already feeling the heat of her disapproval radiating into him. The weeks of recovery since the attack on her have done her well, a significant amount of her injuries greatly reduced, to the point of almost looking normal again—at least superficially speaking.
Her skin is no longer an open seeping sore. Still pinkish and inflamed, it carries the sheen of healing, rather than the shock of a fresh injury. The overlapped bandages that had previously covered her are mostly gone, though several Avoxes are hard at work rubbing sharply scented ointments and cremes onto her exposed flesh, belaying a radiance that Grian can now see is medically forced.
There are fewer doctors surrounding her, but the numerous IVs of fluids remain, as do the beeping banks of machines arranged in a wall behind her, output displays and automatically updated graphs charting her body’s every expenditure.
“Well?” Agrias demands before Grian has even a moment to settle or gather his wits. “Explain yourself.”

When the cannon fires, he’ll run to the Cornucopia and grab whatever he can, however he can. Meanwhile, Symmetry will retreat to a safe distance to scout out their best chance for an easy escape or somewhere to hide. When they’d made this plan, Vex had imagined an arena of hills and trees that would provide shelter and plenty of cover, not this windswept expanse, the red-ochre streaked dunes extending out all around them.
There’s no time to change their plan now. Looking around the ring he can see Symmetry, her jaw set and hands coiled into fists. There’s nothing either of them can do. Suspended in agony, they wait, tense, until a hidden cannon fires and a blast of trumpets play three harmonized notes.
The 77th Hunger Games have begun.

Kinda small "meet the artist" down below, but due to chapter circumstances I think it suits the vibe?
About us not leaving the desert - name of today's art - DesertDuo being in desert (woah) is actually a super personal thing to me. I've started majorly drawing people only after I've found out who Scar and Grian are, and I've found them through 3d and Double life. Before that I've just practiced rarely here and there, but it was nothing big.
Back in the day 3d life inspired me so much that I've picked up a HUGE project to me. My magnum opus was my DesertDuo Youth animation, in which I've put months of work and polished my human style to a level that I was content enough with at the time (must watch for all desertduo enjoyers /lh, would appreciate it a lot tho /serious):
I was SO in love with what turned out. Used that exact animation as examples of my work everywhere, my tumblr banner, it became my daily life for a long period of time - and then Youtube algorithms just flopped it, not picking up all of that hard work. It shook me to a point of not doing any art at all for a year and any major daily art projects for A LONG time - up until june 2026 :)
Looking back on Youth - I'm still SUPER proud of it, I do and will love it with all my heart. But I do think I've progressed A LOT - it clicked when I've finished that weeks art. It's time for the banner to step down in favour of new favourite desert-vibe art with still my fav DesertDuos in it <33 I looove history rhyming in the prettiest way possible, that weeks chapter and art are the best symphony to me.

I'm losing my MIND. The flow and movement and perspective and emotion in this. I love how you've handled the angles- it's literally like we can see this moving. The sharp pan up towards the blue sky, and the sandstorm boxing them in. The chaos of them all being caught mid-motion and the spark of the creeper mutt exploding. This is, yet again, EXACTLY how we saw this in our minds. It's like you're sitting in our brains with us!
And ohhh my god. The bonus piece with Symmetry's tears. I love how they catch the same refraction as Conduit's earring- how he's still there with them. And how desperate and ANGRY she looks. Like, how dare Vex selfishly (stupidly) do this to her.
I love this SO much. Every week you keep raising the bar, we're seriously so extremely fortunate and lucky to get a treat like this once, much less so often. Thank you thank you THANK you! AAAA <3 <3 🔐🧡💜

I also love that the mood with the guys is a little more upbeat, as if they're both pretending they can ignore what comes next hahaaaaaa Thank you for this as always, Chi!! This part, at least, Vex is familiar with. The interviews—hosted by the renowned Scott Smajor—are an institution of their own, almost as anticipated an event as the Hunger Games itself. Brought up on stage, dressed in their stylist’s finest, and broadcast live, the event will be the tribute’s one and only chance to present themselves before the Capitol before they’re swallowed up by the arena. It’s during the interviews that tributes best catch the eyes of the sponsors—Capitolites with deep pockets, who will pay to send their favourites advantages into the arena.
Some of Vex’s earliest memories are of watching the tribute interviews. Too young to understand the gravity of the situation, he’d been captivated by the pageantry, the lights, the costumes, and the witty banter. Everyone on stage seemed delighted to be there, laughing and smiling from ear to ear, twirling to show off their outfits, and speaking highly of both the Games and the Capitol.
As he’d grown older, the novelty of the showcase hadn’t diminished, but more and more he’d begun wondering how much of the broadcast was scripted and edited before it was broadcast out across the nation.
Now, he can say with confidence that the answer is: a lot.

Chapter 4 - Training for the tributes begins, preparing for both the Games and the skill presentation to the Gamemakers. Vex is out of his depth, and allies are harder to come by than he thought.

“More weapons?”
To her credit, Symmetry doesn’t startle, offering him a slight smile as she carefully retrieves several throwing knives from where she’d embedded them in the hard-packed material of a target board.
“Scalar thinks I have a knack for them,” she explains, her voice low. “She wants me to focus on weapons today—to give us an edge with the rest of the competition.”
For a while, Vex simply stands back and watches Symmetry continue with the throwing knives. She’s always been a quick study, but it’s even more evident now how committed she is once she sets her mind on a task. She’s relentless, sweat beading on her brow as she aims at the target, throw after throw.
Inspired by her devotion, he turns to look at the loaded racks of weaponry, grabbing a bow simply because it’s nearest.
It’s heavier than he expects, made of some sort of high-carbon metal that reminds him of the material they used in Three for making springs. The string is already taut, and it takes more effort than Vex expects to pull it back and keep it held in position.
He thinks of Games from the past—of tributes he watched wielding bows. Using them to shoot and pick off other tributes like it was nothing.
Clearly they had far more practice than he ever will.

Would you LOOK at this!!!! I LOVE how you've drawn the movement between the two halves of the image, the flow is beauuutiful. Scar (sorry, Vex!) is SOOO perfect, too. The cheek on him (and it's going to work like a CHARM on Grian hahaha aaaaa I love the cupid's-arrow effect. I love the detail of Scar's fingers crossed behind his back. And the chill blue vex lighting for Scar, versus the warm bright watcher tones for Grian. Aaaaa, Scar with his back to us but we can see his face, and Grian facing us but his expression is completely covered!! It's all so good!!! I'm making it my phone lock/home screen >:D

We have a general idea of how many arcs/chapters it'll be, yes! We probably won't put a number on it until we're a little closer to the end though since things are bound to change a lot between now and however many months it takes us to finish the fic heheh
And we ARE pre-writing! :D Just like we did with TAMN, we made sure to have several chapters banked before we ever started posting! Right now, we're about ~4 chapters ahead of what we've currently posted, but hopefully we'll be able to get back to TAMN levels, where we were about 8 chapters ahead at any given moment. Having a buffer like that really gave us some breathing room when we had "bad" weeks where one or both of us couldn't write at all or when life just got in the way.
We'll also be doing scheduled breaks like we did during TAMN! Should be once per arc just like we did back then since that worked well for us (we used the week off of posting to catch up on editing/writing) but may be more often if we end up needing it--regardless, we'll let everyone know in advance so it shouldn't interrupt our posting much! ✨

“More weapons?”
To her credit, Symmetry doesn’t startle, offering him a slight smile as she carefully retrieves several throwing knives from where she’d embedded them in the hard-packed material of a target board.
“Scalar thinks I have a knack for them,” she explains, her voice low. “She wants me to focus on weapons today—to give us an edge with the rest of the competition.”
For a while, Vex simply stands back and watches Symmetry continue with the throwing knives. She’s always been a quick study, but it’s even more evident now how committed she is once she sets her mind on a task. She’s relentless, sweat beading on her brow as she aims at the target, throw after throw.
Inspired by her devotion, he turns to look at the loaded racks of weaponry, grabbing a bow simply because it’s nearest.
It’s heavier than he expects, made of some sort of high-carbon metal that reminds him of the material they used in Three for making springs. The string is already taut, and it takes more effort than Vex expects to pull it back and keep it held in position.
He thinks of Games from the past—of tributes he watched wielding bows. Using them to shoot and pick off other tributes like it was nothing.
Clearly they had far more practice than he ever will.
