Volume 17 repeats again and again this message of atonement and owing debts. Both Atsushi and Lucy even believe that they owe each other many and are confused by the other thinking so. Tecchou asks how it can be a crime to repay a person (or something of the like I’m too lazy to look up the exact words due to a headache). I think it was an important set up for Sigma’s backstory and what was to come after this volume, since a lot of Bungou Stray Dogs puts emphasis on promises made and broken, as well as those who we have lost in one way or another. Memories are a significant to both Sigma and Ango. For Mushitaro, he’s haunted by his memories of his friend even now. I really admire the way these themes tie together in the manga.
