so the biggest, most visible offender when it comes to lucio are probably his skins, the hokcey ones especially. for starters, he’s from the favela. the closest thing you’ll get is those hockey tables at arcades, and we sure as hell don’t call it air hockey all that often. he was born poor in a tropical country. there is literally one ice skate rink in the entirety of the city from what i know, and the ticket isn’t cheap. really, the one reason he has those skins is because he was supposed to be canadian, but blizzard decided to make him brazilian isntead at the last second.

another problem is, as i said in the post, his winter skin. like, really? he’s dressed as santa? fun fact! people who dress as santa with all the clothes and stuff are bound to faint from the heat. it’s around 100ºF / 30ºC every day of the summer. we don’t get “winter” in rio. there’s moist summer and dry summer. that’s it. and the fact that junkrat got a summer skin in winter and lucio didn’t really raises my eyebrows. after all, lucio does live in the southern hemisphere, just like junkrat.

and boy there’s some big racist undertones to blizz giving him that jazzy skin. he’s not from anywhere that plays jazz on the regular. that’s not part of his cultural history, not part of his identity. at all. so you can guess why they gave him that skin, right? he’s black. so jazz! makes sense, right!

and frogs. i’m not going to go on a rant here on frogs, because that’s such a minor issue compared to everything else. frogs aren’t popular here, and are in fact kind of gross for most of us. we wouldn’t pet frogs unless you wanted to be “that weird kid who touched a frog once”.

as for the lack of an accent. BOI, is that an issue. his VA is a nice person and all that, but he doesn’t know a lick of my language. there are thousands of brazilians living in the US. i have family in the US. they could’ve gotten someone who knows at least a little bit of portuguese. i don’t mind the lack of accent in itself, but that’s just another thing that contributes to him not feeling brazilian. i watch a lot of youtube, and it’s so very few people who remember he’s brazilian. i’ve heard jamaican, canadian… but nobody remembers brasil. we don’t get representation. most people still think we speak spanish. and most characters have lines in their language, and lucio doesn’t even have his ult in portuguese, because they don’t want to ask the VA to learn even a little bit. say one sentence without too much accent. there are so many phrases that could be “let’s break it down” and “drop the beat”. so fucking many. and it’s honestly just so disheartening to see a character that’s supposed to represent me get this kind of treatment. but i guess his VA is “such a nice person” or something like that… and i know. I Know. they’re not gonna put any other brazilian hero, because they feel like they’ve done their job. us brazilians will have to live with exactly one character from a good series/movie/video game being the sole representation for us. and shiaolin showdown ended over a decade ago.
