New South Wales Greens politician Abigail Boyd has used parliamentary powers to obtain documents detailing serious food safety breaches.  

Australia has the highest extinction rate in the world. That isn't because of the brumbies, it's human beings. Australians say we love animals, but that couldn't be further from the truth. We eat our national emblems, we kill kangaroos in horrific manners, our koalas teater on and off the endangered list and we are mind-blowingly killing our historic brumbies in a fashion that isn't fit for us to watch. In other words, the helicopters don't have cameras, so the situation can't be monitored. Our @rspcansw @rspcaaustralia, the organisation that's supposed to be for the animals, condones the slaughter... but what does one expect from an organisation that profits from slaughterhouse animals? Our pathetic excuse of a government @albomp @chrisminnsmp @ Penny Sharpe (who has blocked me) are telling everyone everything EXCEPT THE TRUTH. @nswnationalparks and @invasive_species_council NSW think that this whole situation is funny and have blatantly lied to people who are asking for clarity.

The Animal Welfare Assessment of Brumby Aerial shooting 2023 Report states one brumby was chased by a helicopter for 9 minutes and 29 seconds then it was shot at, hit in the thorax and took around 3 minutes to die. Horses aren't built to withstand a run like that. In the report, very few horses had a shot to the head. A lot of the photographs from this current 2026 cull show horses with blood coming from the nostrils - ie the arteries in the lungs have exploded, which is something incredibly painful to go through and it makes them feel like they are being slowly suffocated - so our brumbies are being chased to the point where they are suffering exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage. Does anyone think chasing a brumby for up to ten minutes in a helicopter to the point where deep in the lungs the veins burst and then finally they are peppered with up to 7 to 15 bullets is humane?

The brumbies of Australia face the risk of being shot from helicopters despite the wild horse management plan in place protecting them. 3000 brumbies are to be retained in the park, yet not even 1000 brumbies are left. Aerial culling will again be happening in Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales in June 2026. It's a barbaric method of population control that often leads to a slow and painful death for horses; Families get scattered, pregnant mares are forced to run for their lives, bellies, wombs, spines and chests pierced by bullets and the bodies are left to rot where they fell.

One is a horse girl who grew up absolutely in love with the story of the Silver Brumby, all of Elyne Mitchell's books and the idea of Brumbies in general

The other is a conservationist who understands that introduced species cause tremendous damage to fragile and unique Australian ecosystems like Kosciuszko and that huge animals with hard hooves like horses are completely unlike any Australian fauna that evolved alongside that landscape. We don't have any hoofed animals native to the ecosystem at all. That's a huge difference. There's no predators either that would contend with something like a horse.

But I always feel for the feral animals too. They didn't ask to be brought here, or to be turned loose. It's not their fault that they're a negative impact on the landscape and they certainly can't change it. Aerial culling seems unnecessarily cruel, although I also understand that resources for managing feral animals is limited.
