Mild spoilers:

This movie has very little to do with Wukong Chuan 悟空传 and its big tragedy actually. While the ending is still Tragic because of character death, Wukong survives and there looks to be hope.  The story, some spoilers present, goes something like: 

Sun Wukong has a very Plot Important Stone Heart/Core of a demon that is immensely powerful so heaven Hates it. Main villain incinerates Mount Huaguo and will do it again 10/10 if they find that the Stone Heart/core is still alive. The Stone Heart is, of course, stone monkey Sun Wukong. Sun Wukong is totally motivated by his hate of fate and heaven for destroying his home. Before the story starts the Immortal Puti rescues Wukong and tells him that if he wants to avenge Mount Huaguo he needs to stop fate. To stop fate, there is a convenient metal contraption in Heaven that apparently decides how fate goes, so all he needs to do is get up there and smash it. 

While he goes up to Heaven to try smash the thing, he gets caught up in a lunchroom fight where he meets all the mvp’s: Ahzhi, The Erlang Shen, Hot™  Tianpeng and Engineer Juanlian. Things happen and they all fall down to earth where they’re suddenly stranded. Without powers. At all. So these superhuman celestial beings have to fend for themselves in this cold, apocalyptic wasteland while squabbling amongst themselves. Until Heaven decides it’s Murder Time again. Some love story things happen. 

PART 1 MAJOR SPOILERS:

WOW ERLANG SHEN DID YOU REALLY HAVE TO DO THAT THING WHERE YOU’RE MILD AND SOFT-SPOKEN BUT RADIATE DISCIPLINE AND POWER AND PRESTIGE, LIKE UR QUIET BECAUSE YOU’VE NOTHING TO SAY BECAUSE THERE’S NOTHING TO PROVE UR ABSOLUTE. YOU DONT WASTE BREATH YOU DONT WASTE STEPS EVERYTHING IS TO THE POINT. Even if the story doesn’t support this -GOOD, VERY GOOD ERLANG SHEN VIBES, ACTOR SHAWN YUE/余文樂/YU WENLE UR GOOD. 

Anyhow, Erlang Shen’s great look and five o’clock shadow was in harmony until the Firenation Heaven attacked. (They change his look entirely for the last act and. Put. it. back. please. He changes so completely it doesn’t even feel like its the same guy hahaha which is what it was probably going for but his attractiveness level went down about 90% it was a nightmare. Return to me dork Yang Jian who lets old ladies with dementia regard him as they like. (Because shit, he’s stoic but he’s not a goddamned monster gosh.)
