Brown bean soup
I actually got this from a cooking book, but whatever, it's cheap, easy, and delicious. As opposed to most, it serves two, but you can just put it in the freezer to eat the other half later. And again, I explained it as simple as possible, so even people who've literally never cooked before can make it.
Ingredients:
One can of brown beans
One leek
One onion
One or two fresh (meaning uncooked) sausages. I always go with pork sausages, as is Dutch tradition, but you can also opt for a halal/kosher beef or poultry sausage, or a vegetarian soy-based sausage
Three-quarters of a litre of water (Americans will have to convert that to cubic feet or whatever)
Salt, pepper, or tabasco to taste
Utensils:
A knife and cutting board
A pot that's large enough to hold all the ingredients, with a lid
Something to stir the soup with
A stove/heater/whatever to heat food with
A soup bowl and a spoon
Recipe:
Take the outer 2-3 layers off the leek, chop off the roots, and then slice up the rest and wash it.
Cut the top and bottom off the onion, peel off the outer (darker) layer, and slice the rest into pieces. These pieces don't need to be small.
Put the beans, onion, leek, and water together in the pot and stir. You don't need to drain the beans first, the pot fluid actually adds to the taste of the soup. Put the sausage(s) on top.
Put the lid on the pot and the pot on maximum heat.
When the water starts bubbling, put the heat to low and wait for at least an hour.
Taste the soup to decide whether or not to add salt, pepper, or tabasco.
Take the sausage(s) out and slice it/them up.
Put the soup in the bowl together with the sausage pieces and enjoy!
