hi!! i see you posting a lot about unreal, and i was wondering what you'd say to someone considering watching it, but unsure. like, what makes it so special and beautiful? which aspects of it do you find most intriguing, and how do you relate to certain characters or situations? i'm rly sorry if this is a weird question; it's just that i'm considering watching it and i trust your opinion and love hearing people talk about things they love. thank you!!
alright alright, this is answered in conjunction w/ @ammapreakers and @brotticelli because i want to deliver well.
so i first started watching it because i read two pieces of meta about it by blogs i really like, elucipher and ilvalentinos. then, within the first episode, i was hooked, mainly because of rachel goldberg, but everyone else played a part as well. so that’s the first point - the characters are incredible. it features so many great women, w/ real & varied personalities, and there are only like... four guys of note in the first season. excellent.
the thing w/ those female characters is they don’t have to be picture perfect, sweet or even likable. savs drew a comparison to gone girl in that all of them are sort of the villains and the heroes at the same time. you also get best friend female competition dynamics / toxic relationships coming through from the situation they’re put in.
the big pull for me and a lot of other people is the mental illness rep, it’s super honest and really well depicted, especially seeing rachel has bpd (and possibly bipolar as well). like, fuck, she’s just allowed to just exist as she is. we see it all - the good, the bad, the unhealthy, the brilliance that comes out of it. i mean, that’s definitely where i relate the most.
it also offers decent social commentary, especially in regards to the entertainment business. it addresses mental illness, it addresses gender roles, racism & sexual orientation. it’s not perfect, it definitely has some issues but for something that sounds almost trashy in concept, it does pretty well for itself.

“He says, come and watch the rain. I tell him, I am all the rain and I am right here.”
― Clementine von Radics
September is quiet, a buzz of cicadas like the press of your brain against your temples. What do you want? To get out. To live without the weight of the world on your shoulders. A scream rises up in the back of your throat. You want to get it out, but it’s lodged someplace hidden. Your heart beats, but it’s crooked. There’s something slipping from within you and it’s from beyond where you can reach. You’re a box markedhandle with care but you’ve been dropped too many times to count. Leaves drop to the ground and you count the stars in the great abyss pressing down between your scapulae. What do you want? To escape. To run away. To map the constellations instead of holding them on your spine.
Things To Ask Atlas, A. M. Jarvis
