Getting to Know...
broox.
Today, broox has released the official music video for 'Sheâs Been Listening,' one of the singles from her recent EP, Over Easy.
Created in collaboration with director Sara Ravid, broox's 'She's Been Listening' music video brings to life a queer re-imagination of childhood. Â In addition to the new music video, broox has also announced that her song 'Low Key' will be featured in Showtime's reboot of The L Word, the groundbreaking TV series that saw lesbian love stories take centerstage. Tune in to The L Word: Generation Q season premiere on December 8 to hear 'Low Key.'
broox's sophomore EP, Over Easy, was released in September and shows an evolution in broox's artistry since her 2018 debut, Out/Through. Digging into the resonance of emotional melodies, synth-wave sensation, and rhythmic movements, the Brooklyn-based artist makes music to make you feel. Her svelte, soul-baring songs glitter with R&B, indie-pop, and electronica influences in a way that feels fresh and authentic. With lyrics that revolve around her experience as a young, queer woman in 2019, broox pushes the envelope of queer representation in music with each new release.
We had a chat with broox all about the new video, 'Low Key's appearance on the rebooted The L Word and what she has planned next. Read the Q&A below.
Hi broox! Please tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to make music.
"I grew up playing the cello, trumpet, and sax, and fell in love with music through those instruments, soon taking up the guitar and piano shortly after, composing my own singer-songwriter songs. In high school, I would go to the music room during lunch, or any chance I had really, and just play away. This later translated into producing music in college. I started to learn all the DAWs and made it a point to intern at music composition houses, seeking out mentorship and to learn a much as possible. But mostly my learning experience came from trial and error, producing song after song, really diving in and not being afraid to make mistakes, because sometimes they were good mistakes that led to some of the best elements of the composition itself. I learned a lot in the studio when working with other co-producers on my last few releases. I would just observe their workflow, mixing techniques, the plugins they used, their equipment etc. and tried to take a mental note of it all and store it in my mind, bring it back home with me."
Youâve just released the video for 'Sheâs Been Listening' which brings to life a queer re-imagination of childhood. What inspired you to choose that concept for the visuals?
"When I began discussing it with my director, Sara Ravid, a good friend and NYU Tisch grad, along with our Costume Designer Ben Stevenson, and Production Designer Rosalie Neal, we talked a lot about our relationship to our queer identities, and how itâs shifted and changed over the years. We talked about that tender time of adolescence and the things that shaped it. We talked about hobbies, senses of style, and childhood crushes- we all had the hots for Janis Ian and Alyson Stoner. The concept from the video grew from there. We asked ourselves- knowing what we know now, what would we have changed? What do we wish we had done differently, or done more of? In the end, it all comes back to community. It was important to me to work with my own LBGTQ community to bring those questions to life."
What was your favorite part of making the video?
"Collaborating on this project with my queer community. All of the extras are queer identified. Some are actors, but many are just friends and other members of our community here in New York. I value this community so deeply- can you imagine if I had this kind of support as a child? I had the time of my life making this video with my closest friends- people I wish I had when I was growing up, who understand me and push me to be my truest self. The key to this video was trust and collaboration- itâs all our voices as one."
You also have your song 'Low Key' being featured in the upcoming premiere episode of the rebooted The L Word this weekend. How did that come about and what does it mean to you?
"Music supervisor Kier Lehman and James Cartwright were fans and reached out. I nearly dropped my phone. I mean Kier Lehman?! He supervises for some of my favorite shows like Insecure! I didnât know I can scream so high pitched before until I received that email. As a huge fan, to be recognized by Kier and his team means the world to me. This is my first big sync deal on a show that I love and helped me become more comfortable in my sexuality, so it means a lot to me. I recall desperately wanting a queer group of friends while watching this show, and years later, I will be watching the premier of the new series in my living room with the queer community of friends I have found- itâs surreal, truly! It's humbling to not only be recognized for my music but to also be given the opportunity to share it with the world, especially as a queer woman and artist who grew up on The L Word and found solace in it years ago when I was first coming out. We need more queer women representation in this industry."
I couldn't agree more! Finally, what are your plans for 2020? Any new music on the horizon?
"Iâm trying to step more into the world of publishing/sync and learn more about it. Iâm in the middle of signing a publishing deal, so hopefully you will be hearing more of me in the near future! I am excited to get back into the studio and work on my first LP. Iâve been making a ton of music, and have a lot of great demos already. Now the tricky part is just narrowing it down. More performances, more music videos, more broox coming your way."
Over Easy is out now.
