This character was formerly written 寬, a combination of 宀 house/roof and 萈 a character meaning goat. The upper component of 萈 is not 艹 grass, but rather ⻀ rams horn. Here 萈 is a phonetic element which signals the on’yomi, but also carries a meaning of “spacious.” 寬/寛 signifies a large and spacious home. By association 寬/寛 came to mean a place where one can “relax,” and over time developed connotations of easy going/generousness.
