Rating: M
Song in chapter: Mr. Brightside by The Killers
_____
Aro walked into the throne room with a smile on his face. He ignored how Caius was glaring at him and Marcus just looked done. Sitting down he sat quietly a moment before glancing at Caius.
“Want to know why I’m happy?”
Caius didn’t even look in his direction. Today was one of the days that he wanted a roll of duct tape to shut Aro up.
“No.”
Aro frowned before turning to Marcus.
“Marcus…”
“No. How good can it really be?”
Aro, looking offended, pouted for a moment before talking.
“Y/n is coming back!”
He couldn’t help it. After receiving a text from you, his baby sister, he couldn’t be happier. You had been in America doing only God knew what for years. Aro had been trying to get you to return for some time but you kept saying no. You wouldn’t even tell him why you wanted to leave the comfort and safety of Volterra. You had begged Aro to let you go and see the world on your own. He finally relented, and you were gone the same day, starting work as a lingerie model (much to Aro’s dismay and horror) in America.
I can’t open a lingerie magazine anymore!
Aro yelled while throwing a magazine across the room. Felix picked up the book and Aro screamed at him not to look.
Caius and Marcus both finally showed some emotion.
“When?”
Caius asked, looking suddenly uncomfortable. Hearing that you, Ari’s sweet, bubbly sister, were coming back was shocking. It was also potentially dangerous for him. Caius knew why you left. It was him. The two of you had been having some top-secret affair that no one knew about. You had left after Caius refused to leave Athenadora (even though the marriage was over LONG before it actually ended). You no longer wanted to be a dirty secret.
How he would explain this to Aro was still a mystery.
Sorry. I conned her into sleeping with me under the guise of me leaving Athenadora, but I didn’t have any intention to. I didn’t even think I cared about her until she was gone.
Sorry, she was hot and I was being a needy hoe.
Neither of these excuses was very great. Caius had taken extra care not to let Aro touch him since you had left. The last thing that he wanted was to explain to Aro how he was a no-good bastard who broke his sister’s heart when she said “I love you,” and he said he didn’t reciprocate.
Now, as a middle finger to Caius, you appeared half naked with baby blue contacts. If Caius didn’t have feelings for you, he wouldn’t be so damn moody that other men were looking at you too.
I’m a bloody idiot. I had a perfectly good girlfriend who was actually interested in me and cared about me.
That was all Caius could say about the whole situation. Aro finally spoke, ending Caius’ brooding.
“Tomorrow! I’m so glad to have someone to talk to.”
Marcus sighed.
“You have us.”
Aro stood up again.
“Neither of you wanted to talk to me.”
Caius smirked.
“Because you’re annoying. Did you ever think that you drove Y/n crazy? You watched over her like a forlorn mother dog. She was just too nice to tell you to shut the fuck up. Marcus and I are at least honest.”
Aro gave Caius an annoyed scowl.
“I did not. I think it had to do with some man. I just don’t know who. Some bastard broke her heart and now she’s out there half naked.”
Marcus hummed in agreement.
“It’s always some bastard.”
Caius sat watching the two out of the corner of his eye. He was not about to get involved in some insult match, especially when it concerned himself.
“I agree. Everything will be fine. She will have her older brothers who love and supports her.”
Caius rolled his eyes.
“You had every lingerie magazine banned from the castle so no one can look at her. That’s not support. That’s control.”
Aro turned to glare at Caius.
“If you had a sister, would you want to or have another man look at her breasts and ass?”
Caius shook his head as Aro leaned back.
“I thought so. Now if I could only get her to stop blocking me from reading her thoughts, I could find out who this man is then I could track him down.”
“She’s a grown woman.”
Marcus commented. Aro held his hands up.
“I have lost one sister. I can’t lose another. Now I can just wrap Y/n in bubble wrap, look at her and say no.”
Caius scoffed.
“She will do as she pleases.”
Aro turned back to Caius with a glare.
“Then you look after her. You’re single.”
Caius immediately got up and headed for the door without another word.
“Look after your own sister. I’m not a babysitter. I have a job to do.”
Aro waited until Caius was out of the room before turning to Marcus.
“Does he seem out of sorts to you?”
Marcus shook his head before returning to his normally disinterested state.
“Seems like business as usual.”
Caius was in a hell of a mood the rest of the day and most of the next morning. How was he going to face you? Did he beg for forgiveness and explain he simply didn’t know how love worked? Did he throw you over his shoulder, carry you to his chambers and let you see what he was actually made of? The latter sounded more exciting but you probably wouldn’t go for it.
“Are you going to tell Aro?”
Caius looked up when Marcus started speaking in his direction
“Tell him what?”
Caius asked, comfy. Marcus smirked.
“That it was you who was bedding Y/n.”
Caius turned, looking completely shocked. Marcus gave him a shrug before looking ahead.
“How did you know?”
Marcus groaned.
“It wasn’t hard to put together. She left and you turned into a bigger ass than normal. I also caught the two of you making love. Thankfully, you didn’t see me and I didn’t see much. After she called you daddy, I really heard enough. I wish I had bleach for my ears and brain.”
This was one of the few times Marcus looked remotely amused. Caius, meanwhile, sat motionless. Marcus knew! Marcus saw!
“Fuck. Did you tell Aro?”
Marcus shook his head.
“Not my business. What is my business? Why did you break her heart?”
Caius dramatically stood up.
“I was still technically with Athenadora. Granted, we both had been seeing other people for a while. I didn’t know what I really felt for her…now I do. Seeing her on the cover of those blasted magazines, knowing she was alone where other people could be with her…”
Marcus held a hand up.
“Don’t spiral.”
Caius stopped pacing and turned to Marcus.
“How do you expect me not to? Y/n is going to come back and Aro will figure everything out.”
Marcus was silent for a moment, looking thoughtful.
“Unless she keeps her shields up. Y/n has never been one to confess everything to Aro. She knows how her brother is. I would think that she would have more respect for you than that.”
Caius growled.
“Maybe it’s because I’m petty but I would be signing like a damned canary to Aro.”
Marcus shrugged.
“We call you King Petty for a reason.”
Caius would have liked to laugh at that comment. He was petty and he knew it. That didn’t stop him from worrying about facing you, however. If Aro knew the truth, he would be pissed. He would find out eventually, somehow, anyway. It was only a matter of time
“Do you have feelings for her?”
Marcus’ voice pulled Caius from his internal spiraling. He stood silently for a few moments, considering his answer. Marcus wouldn’t say a word to Aro. Caius was aware that Marcus knew how annoying Aro could be. The less they triggered that side of him the better.
“Yes.”
Caius said it without thinking because he did have feelings for you. Lying didn’t even cross his mind. Besides, what would lying accomplish? Marcus would have his questions answered the moment that you returned to Volterra.
“I had a feeling. My suggestion would be to talk to her honestly. Don’t do that lying thing that you do. Y/n will figure it out.”
“Lying won’t do me any good.”
Marcus nodded.
“Keep that in mind when she shows up.”
(Meanwhile)
Coming out of my cage and I've been doing just fine
Gotta, gotta be down, because I want it all
It started out with a kiss, how did it end up like this?
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep and she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke and she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed and my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head, but she's touching his
Chest now, he takes off her
Dress now, let me go
And I just can't look, it's killing me
They're taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies, choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay, destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes, 'cause I'm Mr. Brightside
“Okay, that’s enough of that.”
You muttered to yourself before turning off the music that felt like a soundtrack to your life. Returning home to Volterra had brought back a lot of feelings that you had been shoving down for some time.
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss.
It was a lot more than a kiss. It had always been more than a kiss. You rolled your eyes at the thought. In the few years that you had been gone, you had been telling yourself that your feeling for Caius was nothing more than a stupid crush that got WAY out of control. Clearly, you were lying to yourself.
This is what I get for messing with dangerous men.
You should have listened to Heidi when she said not to mess with Caius. She tried to warn you, and you didn’t listen. All you saw was the romance that you read about in the stupid novels and where did it get you? Hurt.
Now you were returning home and had to face all of the demons of your past. It didn’t matter that you knew Caius was single and Athenadora was gone. That didn’t stop you from still being hurt over his original treatment.
Stepping off of the plane, you smiled seeing Heidi waiting. She immediately broke into a huge smile before running over and wrapping her arms around you.
“Y/n! My sweet favorite person in the world! You’re actually here. Let me look at you.”
She immediately pulled back and petted your face.
“Heidi! I’m right here.”
You replied as both of you giggled.
“You're as perfect when you left!”
Wrapping her arm through yours, the two of you turned to leave the crowded terminal
“I’m really glad you’re home.”
She said. You sighed.
“I’m glad to be home to see you and a few others. I’m afraid being back here will be like listening to Mr. Bright side by The Killers on constant repeat.”
Heidi frowned. She knew what you meant. As much as she wanted to say “I told you so” she couldn’t. She couldn’t fault you for falling in love with someone. Heidi would forever be annoyed with Caius. That’s who she would be annoyed with.
“Luckily, she isn’t there anymore. You don’t have to worry about looking at her…just him. Trust me when I say Caius hasn’t been the same since you left. He’s been a royal prick. If people bought he was an ass before, they didn’t see anything until you left. I think that and the lingerie modeling was the kick in the balls he needed.”
You scoffed.
“Serves him right! He’s just upset that he wasn’t getting his dick sucked any longer or had me to put out for him.”
Heidi faked a gag.
“I don’t know what you saw in him to begin with. He never treated you the way you deserved. You don’t deserve to be anyone’s dirty secret.”
You squeezed Heidi’s hand.
“It’s funny how he and Athenadora finally called it quits after I left.”
“Again, kick in the balls, dear.”
Arriving back in Volterra, Aro stood waiting like an overly excited puppy. Marcus and Caius had already told him to shut up a handful of times when you didn’t come specifically at the time you stated.
When you finally stepped into the throne room, Aro immediately had you in an overly tight hug.
“Where have you been? You were supposed to be here an hour ago!”
You awkwardly patted his back, having to wiggle away.
“I’m sorry, I think the pilot forgot how to read a globe. I also got busy talking to Heidi. I’m still the same me that left.”
You said, patting his cheek. Your eyes flickered to Caius. As you expected, he was glaring at you. You knew that look well. That was a livid jealous glare that he reserved just for when some other member of the male race spoke to you.
The two of you locked eyes for a brief moment before you made yourself run back to Aro.
“I’m glad you are wearing clothes.”
You felt your mouth drop before shaking your head. Of course, that was what Aro was worried about.
“You realize that I don’t walk about all day in lingerie, right?”
Aro winced.
“For the pictures are enough for my mind to consider. I had to ban lingerie magazines here. I hated to do that!”
You reached out, patting Aro’s cheek again.
“Poor baby. Do you realize they make porn for free, right? You can skip past the lingerie part and get right to the good stuff. Oh, wait, you have a wife.”
Aro made a slight whining noise before going back to holding your hand. He turned back to Marcus and Caius.
“This is where one of you says something.”
Caius shook his head.
“Don’t bring me into your bullshit. We have already talked about this.”
Aro scowled before turning back to you.
“He threatened to hold my head over a flame.”
You met Caius’ gaze again. This time, the two of you stared at each other a bit longer. You wanted nothing more than to reach out and touch him. In all of the time that you had been gone, he was who you missed the most. Regardless of the fact that he hurt you…here you were caring again.
I knew he was trouble when he walked in.
“Like I’m surprised. Aro, get a grip.”
Aro shook his head, trying to look into your thoughts but he couldn’t.
“You can put your shields down.”
You snorted, knowing exactly what he was doing.
“Aro, you’re my brother, and I love you, but there are some things that you do not need to know.”
Aro let go of your hand and put his hands on his hips. He wanted to scream. As much as he adored you, there were times when he wanted nothing more than to give you a good shake.
“That brings me to the subject of your career. Men look at you!”
You nodded, sitting down nonchalantly. Deciding to forget that Caius was sitting right there, you continued torturing your older brother.
“An example of why you aren’t prowling through my mind. Aro, this may come as a shock, and maybe you should prepare yourself but I’m not a virgin”
It took all you had not to laugh at the horrified expression on Aro’s face and at how Caius started to grip the arms of this throne tightly. His eyes started to narrow at you menacingly. Marcus, meanwhile, had glanced over at Caius before meeting your eyes with a “kill me now” expression. He wasn’t sure if he would need to pull Caius back, but little by little he found himself moving toward the edge of his seat.
Poor Marucs.
You suddenly felt sorry for the other man in front of you. Marcus had been through ENOUGH as it was. You slightly forgot that Marcus was the poor guy who had to deal with Caius and Aro daily. God only knew what nonsense he had to listen to since you were gone.
“Who?!! I’ll kill him.”
Aro snapped as you shook your head.
“Yeah, good luck with that. You aren’t killing them because I’m not dumb enough to tell you who they are. Aro, you do not need to know about my sex life just as much as I do not need to know about yours. Aro, stop being an older brother for a moment and accept that I’m not a child.”
Who they are…
Caius started seeing red at that comment. They…other than him, who else was there? Were you in America, having sex with any willing man? Was this a test or a way to give him another middle finger? Either way, Caius was ready to kill whoever “they were.
Aro, meanwhile, still stood with hands clasped.
“I can’t turn it off.”
You reached out, taking his hand in yours.
“I need you to. Just accept that none of my relationships have worked out. Apparently, I have a fancy for unhinged men and so far that has never worked out for me.”
Aro went to his throne and sat down as Caius had had enough.
“Clearly, unhinged men do you no favors. Now do they?”
He turned and walked from the room without another word. Aro sighed. He made a mental note to ask Caius just what he was so pissy about later.
“What he said. Y/n, I just don’t want you to be hurt.”
You groaned. How were you to tell Aro that you had already been hurt and were struggling? The last thing that you wanted was for him to try to fight Caius.
“Aro, again. Turn it off.”
The rest of the afternoon went by relatively calmly. Arw had finally stopped asking who you were sleeping with once Sulpicia told him to knock it off.
“Unhinged men, huh? Is that what you think I am?”
You turned as Caius closed the door to your room. Going back to unpacking your suitcase, you acted as if he wasn’t there for a moment.
“If the shoe fits, I suppose.”
“I didn’t ask you to leave. You decided to be some kind of model, showing off your naked body to any man who would look. Was that some kind of middle finger to me?”
You turned with a groan.
“If you want it to be, sure. I didn’t want to stay here after we broke up. Like hell, I would want to see you with her.”
Caius sat down dramatically.
“You didn’t have to cut me off.”
“Really? Are you hearing yourself? You expected me to just be hanging on, waiting for you to decide your marriage wasn’t worth it anymore? That’s some cold shit, Caius. The two of you should have split hundreds of years ago, before you did. That’s on you. Not me.”
Caius watched you for a few moments before standing back up.
“If you had only given me a little more time.”
Putting down your laundry, you muttered to yourself to keep calm. You knew that this argument would be coming. Sooner or later, you were going to have to face Caius. It was time to get it over with.
“I wasn’t waiting around for you to get your life in order. I deserve better than a man who might want me.”
“Did you find him?”
Caius asked, almost mockingly. He was surprised when you actually smiled.
“No, just a meaningless one-night stand. That was were the they came from when I was talking to Aro…you and Stefan.”
As you expected, Caius went deathly still. His started to speak a few times and was unable to each and every time. When he finally could get a word out, he was nearly trembling with rage. You had seen Caius mad plenty of times over the thousands of years that you had known him. This time, however, it was different. This time it was silent anger that even made you uneasy.
“You let him touch you?”
“That sexy accent got him so far. Too bad he was a giant disappointment…I don’t think I have seen you this mad.”
Caius started laughing. Stefan…fucking Stefan…of all the men that could have touched you…it was that motherfucker.
“You’re luck that I don’t choke you.”
Caius finally managed to get out. He stepped closer to you with trembling fists. Your eyes moved from his hands to his face.
“Wouldn’t be the first time except the others were will you were balls deep inside of me.”
Caius reached out, pulling your body against his and roughly kissed you.
“Did he kiss you like that, huh?”
You stared up at him, feeling almost lightheaded. Had it really been that long since you had been kissed like that? You would feel stupid later for standing there so stupidly but at the moment, Caius left you nearly panting.
“No…”
You mumbled. Caius scoffed as his voice grew colder.
“If you like him and his sexy accent so much, go back to him and leave me the fuck alone”
You reached out, pushing him backwards. If Caius didn’t choke you now that would speak volumes of his mercy to you.
“You have no right to be angry. You didn’t want to be with me. You had a wife. I don’t care that the two of you had some open marriage nonsense. You only want me now because she left you. I’m not about to be some love slave that you can kick around.”
