Being a child Sethy wouldn't notice this, but Brielan is extremely fucked up and it's easy to understand why. In book 1 Brielan is still grieving their best friend while publicly pretending she's still alive and on top of that they're a necromancer. It's their job to take care of their dead friends bones. They're constantly trying to understand Messala's will by searching through her corpse. And ghost-memories of Messala popping up and acting out her daily life as if she's still alive still haunt Finnaun and it's Brielans job to snuff them out
I wonder how different things would go in a hypothetical human au of e&s, would sethy still want to be king or would they gravitate towards the office of Prime Minister, since the Prime Minister has more political power than the royal family? Erin would be Jewish afro-native, probably a daughter of Ashkenazim and Mexican crypto-Jews. I wonder if Sethy would have been raised Christian, there's no Christianity in e&s, but in a contemporary setting she'd probably convert to paganism on her own. Her family is based on a certain Protestant cult, but in a contemporary setting, would they be Protestants or Catholics? In a human au Erin in the military would translate to modern day, and she could still have a knighthood. Sethy as a wizard could definitely translate into a physicist, but druids in history could be scientists, political advisors, doctors, judges, lawyers, or priests, they were a flexible role. There's no such thing as a Royal Advisor these days, but perhaps Brielan could be a Minister. Instead of a Necromancer they could be perhaps a priest.
Of course, in a human au the conflict between cats and dogs wouldn't exist and there wouldn't really be a story, but Erin and Sethy could still come from rival families or social classes.

Speech quirks-
Erin: talks in a sort of staccato way, never uses contractions. it's tempting to think her Saxonish is just bad, but her Saxonish is good, she just talks like that normally. Consistently inserts Ashken into her speech and being able to understand her is one of the priveleges of being her friend. Her accent is German.
Sethy: insufferable know-it-all, doesn't hesitate to use the longest synonym on hand. Thinks out loud in long soliloquy, and doesn't know when she does it. The more uncomfortable she is in a social setting the less eloquent she becomes. Her accent is very upper-class Southeast English.
Brielan: deliberately speaks in a higher register to sound friendly. hmmmmm? Hm. Yes? Their accent is North English.
Darcy: blunt and very little variation in tone. His accent sounds like a Spaniard trying to sound English and failing.
