Last week I asked subscribers about their holiday shopping plans: what are they looking to get for themselves or others? What were their favorite gifts in the past couple years?
I got this great note back from a reader namedĀ Zach:
I have a gift-giving philosophy that I think is pretty solid: Buy people stuff that's not expensive in absolute dollars, but is relatively expensive for the item you're buying. For example, $75 may not be a ton of money, but it's a ton of money for a pair of socks. Let's say the gift budget is $100 per person. Many people have enough income to buy themselves pretty much anything within that budget, so they've already bought a lot of the things that the gift-giver would have given. But, for some items, most people wouldn't spend that kind of money on themselves. A few examples, at a few price points: Great shoe-care products - Saphir, etc. ($25+) Higher-end skin care products (<$50) Real horn accessories - shoe horns, combs, etc. ($50+) Cashmere socks (~$75) Pricier ties - Drakes, etc. ($150+)

I love that! Itās a great philosophy, and Iām sure Zachās gift recipients appreciate his thoughtfulness.Ā Itās a perspective I can relate to, as Iām sure you do. For example, I donāt think Iāll ever pay full price for a Drakeās tie that Iām buying for myself.
But as a gift for someone else? Absolutely.
In that spirit, I spent some time reviewing the gift guides of a few dozen retailers, picking out the sort of items that intrigue me but that I wouldnāt typically purchase for myself. For this post, Iāve rounded up the seven best of those gift guides. They tend to be from smaller retailers with unique inventory.
Note that this post is coming close to cut-off dates for Christmas delivery, so Iāve included those for each retailer if I could find them. If you want to pick up something, youāll want to move soon to avoid paying extra for expedited shipping.
