Page 9. ---- Will Supply Material for New Government Buildings ---- PLANT WEST OF MIMICO ---- New Branch of Prison Reform Movement Instituted by Mr. Hanna - Men Sleep in Tents and Are Not Hampered by Guards. ---- Hard by the Lake Shore road, and just west of the Victoria Industrial School at Mimico, what looks like a construction camp is the nucleus of a large brickmaking industry which the Provincial Government is about to establish. This is to be a branch of the Central Prison reform movement, instituted by Hon. W. J. Hanna, and will be under the immediate direction of Mr. S. A. Armstrong, Assistant Provincial Secretary.
The estimated brick requirements for work already under way by the Provincial Secretary's Department is 25,000,000, and in addition to this quantity a great number of fire-proof tile will also be wanted for the Government buildings now under construction. Difficulty in obtaining delivery and a prospective saving of five dollars on every thousand of brick used has induced Mr. Hanna to embark on this undertaking.
The plant will have a capacity of about 10,000.000 brick a year, and this will be used in the construction of the new Hospital for Insane at Whitby, a certain class of buildings at the Central Prison Farm at Guelph, and additions which have to be made to various institutions in different parts of the Province. Already lime, building stone and crushed stone is being supplied from the Guelph establishment, and the work of the prisoners is being extended to include brick-making.
As reports go so far the prisoners enjoy the new work. They are hardly fettered at all by watching guards, and their sleeping quarters consist of nothing but the tents, which may be seen by the roadside. A flap of canvas is all that separates them from liberty in the night time, but by selection and discipline the desire to make a dash for liberty with the prospect of the brick walls of the Strachan avenue institution in the event of recapture has been a sufficient deterrent until the present time.

Page 16. ---- Roy Voelker, who escaped from the Central Prison brick-yard at Mimico, yesterday had a year added to his sentence by Judge Denton in the Sessions. Voelker had been serving a two-year sentence for theft when he was sent to work at the brick-yard last July. He took his liberty after being there for a few days.
