Tuesday, July 9: Brick Bath, "War Inside"
For a band so beloved and revered, Pantera didn’t prove to have a consistently long-lasting influence on metal: there were moments, especially in the mid ‘90s and early ‘00s, where one could hear a lot of Dimebag and Phil references, but their impact over the years has ebbed and flowed while other bands and subgenres remained evergreen. So it made some sense that Brick Bath took cues from Pantera in early ‘00s, as the latter was still active for at least part of the former’s run. “War Inside” wasn’t full of squaling shredding, but the crunch of the riffs and attacking drums very much recalled Pantera, as did Cody Hubbard’s rough bark. The track leaned more on blunt force than rolling grooves, and had a certain meathead efficiency to it, though the lack of dimension ultimately limited its overall power.
