How many people have go to advice like this,
They start like it’s some magic trick,
Then reveal it’s literally breathing.
Everyone thinks theirs is the best way.
Breathe like a square, or 4, 7, 8,
Whatever trevor, they’re all great.
But I‘ve never found just the breathing to work.
It’s always the distraction, the focus,
The action to help follow it,
Be it a gif of some sort of pattern,
Or a metronome tapped out yourself.
Or even just the thought, mentally counting.
I always say I want to use them more,
And then wonder why they won’t help.
It’s simple if I need to breathe in pattern
Then my mind is not going to separate,
It’ll cling to the stressor, trying to fix it,
No matter what my lungs do.
If I’m going to use breathing patterns more
Then I’m going to learn to walk away again.
No more staying at the desk, staring
While trying to calm myself down,
But actually getting up, moving away,
Finding something to drum to breathe with.
