Check out the first half of AV Okubo's new album Dynasty, produced by (it's illegal not to mention this) Gang of Four's Andy Gill. Dynasty is the band's first output since 2010's Greed of Man. I made fun of Hedgehog last week for taking a long time between albums, but their last one only came out in 2012. It feels like this AV Okubo record has been rumored and pushed back for a very long time, but now it's here. Hailing from industrial stronghold Wuhan, AV Okubo has always been a talented wildcard in yaogun. Wuhan is known for its punk scene, which plays a part in the band's sound, but they also have a heavy dance and electronic influence going on. I've enjoyed the band since around the time they opened up for Ratatat in Shanghai. I was friendly with their previous drummer, Lucky. My favorite moment from one of their shows happened at the old MAO Livehouse in Shanghai when I was smoking cigarettes and drinking with their bassist, huddled against a wall next to the "green room", not realizing that it had been a long time since the previous band had finished and the crowd was getting restless waiting for AV Okubo. Finally, the rest of the band just went on without him and started playing, at which point he broke into a run for the stage and caught on mid-song.
The band's persona is kind of quirky, cool, nerdy, macho, and intelligent all at the same time, which is quite unique on the Chinese indie rock scene. They have a fascination with kitschy pop culture, as well as a revolutionary political side, as well as a sort of dystopian technocratic/technophobic paranoid avant garde sensibility. It's all mixed up like a collage trompe l'oeil and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but when it does it's breathtaking. Take a listen to the first half of the album above and decide for yourself whether it's breathtaking or yawn-inducing. I'm going to give it more of a listen and wait for the second half before passing judgment. UPDATE: I forgot to add this promo video of the boys in the studio. Check it out: Dynasty will be released on Maybe Mars on April 19 at Yugong Yishan in conjunction with the Maybe Mars release of Alpine Decline's Go Big Shadow City, of which we have already spoken.
