Our list of most disturbing movies is almost identical, I was nearly sick during Passion of the Christ. I got up during the movie to go get a drink and a man told me I was ruining his "religious experience" hmm.

The Newsflesh Trilogy by Mira Grant (Feed, Deadline and Blackout) - This series covers the story of a group of journalist in a post-zombie outbreak world uncovering a conspiracy. It mainly focuses on (adoptive) siblings Georgia and Shaun Mason. The characters are all really well-written, the plot is interesting, and it has a really cool take on what a world after the chaos from a zombie outbreak settles down could look like, and it will probably make you cry. A LOT.
