about breaking mirrors
breaking mirrors explores the impact film has on the political situation, representation and perception of palestine and film’s potential in general to act as a catalyst of change.
this tumblr is supposed to serve as a forum and a platform for the exchange of ideas and thoughts surrounding the question how we can create a filmic (visual) language that doesn’t re-establish existing hierarchical structures and stereotypes, but rather tries to explore film as a counter-hegemonic force.
i am a visual anthropologist and filmmaker. when i visited palestine i saw myself confronted with a lot of questions regarding my practice. often, film seems to keep up existing narratives and to be prone to stereotyping. i started wondering how visual narratives and collaborations can be changed in order to exceed established narratives.
palestine is a place with a rich history of film; continually, it has been documented by western, international and local filmmakers. film also plays a significant role when it comes to the representation and perception of the ongoing israeli occupation.
this forum is open to everyone who is interested in the topic, who sees themselves confronted with similar questions and challenges and who would like to explore the possibilities of using film as a tool for change.
