The end of a personal era
I officially deleted my Bravenet account.
I discovered Bravenet years ago when I was looking at adding some features to my website (then hosted on GeoCities). But at the time, my web space was limited, and several features that I wanted weren't available through my hosting package. HTML pages were allowed, but some of the more complex stuff needed more than just HTML, which I wasn't allowed to use.
Bravenet, however, let me add all sorts of features quickly and easily. At various times, I had a guestbook, poll, blog, web comic, site search, email forms, and a hit counter. Everything was set up and hosted on Bravenet's site, and I just linked to them from my website (they even provided me the HTML code). And all of this was free.
When I moved to 1and1 webhosting, however, I realized I didn't need many of Bravenet's services. 1and1 gave me the chance to host my own guestbook, poll, blog, counter, and many other features, and so I started moving away from Bravenet. However, I still clung to a few of the services, more out of loyalty than anything else.
However, with my new redesign of the website over the summer, I didn't use any of Bravenet's services. There was one service I was thinking of keeping, but I couldn't figure out a good way of integrating it into my site. One of the strengths of Bravenet, the fact that it was hosted off-site, thus can be used on any website, became one of the biggest weaknesses for what I wanted. I wanted something that looked like it belonged on my site, not something that looked like it was added on after the fact.
So today, I officially canceled my account with Bravenet. I probably could have kept it running, but frankly, I didn't see the point. Besides, I hadn't used any of its services for nearly six months.
