"Look at me - just breathe, okay?" Cam/Marc (whoa I need to sit down for a second)
(x)
quick note: putting this into the au i’ve already set up of cam and marc having grown up together, being plantonic biffles.
Cam has been here before. He’s seen Marc in this state; choking on fear and hunched over, hands clenched protectively over his face. It’s a sight that Cam never wanted to witness again.
Everyone is looking towards him, silently asking him what to do. Hank looks lost in a way Cam has never seen before; it’s unsettling to note that. Hank is someone who Cam always looks to for guidance, someone who always seems to know what to do or say but now…. now he looks lost and is turned to Cam for answers.
Cam doesn’t waste a moment. He swallows down the worry, skating over to Marc and crouches down to be on ice level with him.
"Hey." He keeps his voice soft, tentatively putting a hand out on Marc’s shoulder. "Hey, Marc, come on. Lower your hands for me, yeah?"
Marc is shaking, his breaths coming in panicked hitches and Cam wants to pull him close and pet his hair, tell him it’s okay and rock him until he’s breathing steadily again but this isn’t the time or place for that.
He puts an edge of firmness to his tone now, squeezing Marc’s shoulder hard. “Marc, I need you to lower your hands. Let me see your eye, babe. Let me check it.”
He gets through to Marc, thankfully. Shaking hands are lowered to reveal closed eyes, pale cheeks and panic etched into the wrinkles between Marc’s brow.
Cam touches his fingertips tenderly to Marc’s cheek, moving a little closer.
"Look at me - just breathe, okay? I need you to open your eyes."
It takes a few moments of quiet reassurance before Marc finally forces his eyes open; his gaze immediately locking onto Cam, silently questioning him.
Cam smiles and that seems to make Marc relax - even just a little.
"It’s okay, Marc. Your eye is okay. It’s alright. You’ve just a bruise on your cheek here," Cam moves his fingers lightly over the darkening spot that comes far too close to Marc’s eye for comfort, "but that’s it."
Marc exhales shakily, eyes closing again and blindly gropes for Cam’s hand; their fingers tangle together, Marc squeezing tightly.
Cam squeezes back, and eventually he’s able to ease Marc back onto his feet, lead him off the ice.
There’s no need for Marc to say anything; Cam already knows what he’s thinking, what he’s feeling.
They lean against each other in the locker room for a while. Cam holding an ice pack to Marc’s cheek for him, free hand rubbing Marc’s scalp lightly.
Minutes tick by and Marc’s breathing evens out again, his hands stop shaking as much.
Hank appears not long after that, still looking so concerned and worried. Cam smiles a little, gestures to Hank to come over and lets Hank take over the task of holding the ice against Marc’s face.
He gets up, leaving Marc with Hank.
He watches for a moment, sees the way Marc relaxes further at the sound of Hank’s voice and just leans against Hank’s side without any hesitation.
It reassures him; he can’t be the one to take care of Marc forever, and Hank……
Hank is a good set of hands to leave Marc in the care of.
