I dont know what exactly this expression is but I love drawing it on him
The 2003 song “Rojo separatista” by the rock band Brams criticizes the results of the “Transition to democracy” -the process started after the dictator Franco’s death in 1975 which was supposed to change Spain from being a fascist dictatorship to become a modern democracy. But this “transition”, led by the fascist rulers themselves who secured their places in the new order, was not what it promised to be, and even less for national minorities like Catalans, Basques and Galicians.
25 years after the ending of the transition with the 1978 Spanish Constitution, this is the impression that the so-called “transition to democracy” left in the Catalan band Brams, as well as in most leftists and/or national minorities.
Lyrics in Catalan and translation to English:
Vint-i-cinc anys de condemna, vint-i-cinc anys més de cadenes, per haver-me despenjat la llufa de l'esquena; per haver-los gosat dir, el dia que s'emprovaven la disfressa de democràcia, que a sota encara es veia la camisa blava.
25 years of sentence 25 more years of chains for having realized that we were the target of this April Fool’s joke [literally: “for having taken down the llufa from our backs”. The llufa is a figure cut from paper -often newspapers- that is hanged on other people’s back on 28th December, our equivalent of April Fool’s Day. The one who has the llufa on their back is being made fun of without knowing it.]; for having dared to tell them on the day they were trying on the democracy costume that underneath we could still see their blue shirt [blue shirt was the fascist uniform, equivalent to the black shirt in Mussolini’s Italy].
Rojo separatista! condemnat a ser rojo separatista! condemnat per ser (repetir tornada)
“Rojo separatista”! [“Separatist red!” in Spanish, this is how fascists called leftists people from national minorities, and sometimes also used it for national minorities as a whole regardless of their ideology. Anyone who criticized the dictatorship’s repression of the national minorities and their languages, or any person who was from a national minority and criticized any aspect of the dictatorship, was sentenced to jail, torture, or death for being a “separatist red”.] sentenced to be a “rojo separatista” [separatist red] sentenced for being a (repeat chorus)
25 years of sentence to the ones who said “yes, sir”, and ironed their costume thinking it was a lesser evil; sentenced to convince themselves that everything was over, as if this submission wasn’t another cell of the same prison.
(Tornada / Chorus)
After all, the ones and the others locked in the same prison, ones with beautiful views the others on the terrorists’ hole. After all, this darkness helps to see clearly. If you know that you are locked you have the hope of escaping.
