The Last Lord of the House of Black
Regulus Black died in a cave. Or so everyone thought. Dragged back from the edge by Voldemort himself, brainwashed into becoming the Dark Lordâs husband, commander, and glittering war consort, Regulus becomes the face of the new worldâuntil the Order of the Phoenix captures him and breaks the spell. Now with no memory of the weeks he spent seducing diplomats, training Death Eaters, and letting Voldemort groan into his mouth, Regulus has to piece together what happened, who betrayed him, and how to cope with the horrifying revelation that heâs been weaponized in silk and bells by a 50-year-old dark wizard. Also, Peter Pettigrewâs a rat.
âââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
The cave had smelled like death.
Salt-slick stone. Algae and rot. The distant, throat-clawing tang of despair.
Regulus Arcturus Black had known he wasnât walking out alive when he stepped into that place. That had been the plan. That had always been the plan. Drink the potion. Take the locket. Die in the depths of that putrid lake, dragged under by corpses with no souls and no eyes and no gods left to pray to.
But death had been slow in coming. The Inferi swarmed him in silence. Cold fingers clamped around his legs, his arms, his throat. His wand long gone, swallowed by the water. He had screamed without sound, kicked until he couldnât feel his limbs anymore. Heâd blacked out somewhere between the water breaching his mouth and the horrible certainty that this had all been for nothing.
And thenâ
Then he woke up.
Not in heaven. Not in hell.
But in a chair.
A chair with cold iron arms, enchanted chains around his wrists, and something wrong in the airâtoo still, too quiet, too precise. He was underground. He could feel it in his lungs.
And someone was watching him.
No, not someone.
Him.
"Sleeping beauty awakens," came the voiceâsilken, sharp-edged, infuriatingly amused.
Regulus blinked. His head throbbed. His magic felt like it had been bled outâhis whole body ached with the hollowness of it, like something precious had been scraped out of his chest and replaced with ice. But worse than that, far worse, was the face standing over him.
Pale skin, dark robes, neat curls. Hands behind his back like a schoolboy. And those eyes, impossible to mistakeâobsidian, gleaming with something too intelligent, too calculating to be anything other than monstrous.
"Tom fucking Riddle," Regulus rasped, voice dry as bone. "Back from licking your own mirror, I see."
Tom smirked.
"I should've let them drown you slower."
"Oh, believe me, they tried. Pity your little lake monsters donât bite as hard as you do."
Tom stepped closer. He didnât blink. Didnât look away. Just drank him in like a wine heâd been saving for too long. And touched him.
First, it was just fingers on the chair. Then the back of Regulusâs neck. Then tracing the line of his jaw. Familiar, too familiar. Obsessed.
"You think your little mockery is gonna make me cry?" Riddle asked softly. "That I'm bawlin' 'bout the past that could have been?"
Regulus scoffed. "You're the one who kidnapped me. Dragged me from a watery grave like a jilted ex."
Tom didnât flinch. Didnât blink.
"Look around ya, Black," he said, low and electric. "Iâve been scheminâ this whole time. I got a team, I got a dreamâand all Iâm gonna do is win."
"Not with that haircut," Regulus muttered.
"Youâre in my house. With my rules. In my room. With my tools." He leaned in so close Regulus could see the flecks of red deep in his pupils. "And worse? Youâre at my mercy. Cursed to watch me take it all."
"Youâve lost your marbles," Regulus said, calm and slow, "and you kidnapped someone to watch. Riddle, love, youâre spiraling."
"Youâve gone ass up. Youâre deep fried. Your last luck has run dry," Riddle snapped, that polished façade cracking. "At last, your check has cashedâand Iâd laugh at how small you lookâ"
"Don't you forget," he growled, fingers curling into Regulusâs collar, jerking him forward.
Regulus looked unimpressed. "You're so obsessed with me."
That caught him.
"I knew you'd need me here. Not dead. Not gone. Here. Your unwilling audience when you finally lose your marbles in act three."
"Youâre huffing glue if you think I wonât end this tale a ruler," Riddle hissed. "Iâm just like you. Except Iâm smarter. Sharper. Brighter. Newer."
"So youâll keep my smug ass alive why, exactly?"
Riddle gritted his teeth. "Toâ"
"To show me youâre not a loser?"
"Do you ever shut up?"
"Donât you forget~"
Riddle rolled his eyes. "Oh, here he goes."
"You ainât won yet!"
"Ooh, Iâm scared~" he mocked, theatrically.
"You still need me like you did before."
"So cute you think I care." Riddleâs voice dropped to a snarl, sharp and soft and poisonous. "Now Iâm the master. And youâre my bottomest bitch."
Regulus raised an eyebrow. "Flattering."
"No more Noble House of Black. No more high and mighty." Tomâs hand ghosted over Regulusâs chest, the spot where the Black family crest used to pulse with his magic. "Now that I flipped the switch."
"You drained me," Regulus said quietly.
Tom didnât deny it. "I had to. You were dangerous. Powerful. Unpredictable."
"You mean better."
"Though your powerâs gone dead," Tom continued, circling him, voice like velvet poison, "you know the show must go on."
He leaned in. Mouth right against Regulusâs ear.
"By the time Iâve had my fun with youâŠ"
His lips brushed the shell of Regulusâs ear.
"Youâll wish that you had stayed gone."
Silence stretched.
Regulus tilted his head, eyes gleaming like stormlight.
"You always were dramatic."
"You always were insufferable."
"You always were in love with me."
Tom froze.
And there it was.
That pause. That tick. That half-second beat where the façade crumbled and the rot underneath came spilling outârancid and sweet and so very human.
Tom turned slowly. One hand still gripped the chair. The other hovered near Regulusâs neck again, but didnât land.
"I couldâve killed you," he said. "Let the Inferi rip you limb from limb."
"You still could," Regulus replied, voice low and sure. "But then you wouldnât have anyone left to impress."
Their eyes locked like dueling blades. The air crackled.
"You think this is impressive?" Tom asked. "Keeping you chained like some curio? This is mercy. This is pity."
"No, Riddle. This is fear."
The strike came fastâTomâs hand slammed into the chairâs arm beside Regulusâs head, cracking the wood, but he didnât touch him.
Not quite.
Not yet.
"Say that again," Tom whispered.
Regulus smiled, slow and poisonous. "Youâre scared of what I mean to people. What I am. You wanted me gone. But you couldnât let me go."
Tomâs hand twitched again.
"Youâre the boy who would be god. But Iâm the prince they loved. And you know they still would."
"Youâre nothing. Youâre chained. Youâre mine!"
Regulus leaned forward as far as the chains would allow. Their foreheads almost touched.
"And yet. You still havenât broken me."
Their breaths were harsh and hot between them.
"You know Iâll never bow."
Tomâs smile returned, slow and cold and unbearable.
"Not yet."
But the way his hand lingered on Regulusâs throat said otherwise.
The way his eyes dropped to Regulusâs mouth and stayedâthat wasnât power. That wasnât triumph.
That was hunger.
And Regulus, for once, didnât smirk.
Didnât speak.
He just watched.
Watched a monster fall apart from the inside out.
And waited.
Tom Riddle paced like a sermon with legs.
Stone floor. Long strides. Robes whispering as if the room itself leaned in to listen. The chamber was circular, carved from old rock and older intent, the walls etched with wards so ancient they hummed faintly, like a held breath. Candles burned without flicker. Power sat heavy in the airâRegulusâs power, siphoned, filtered, bent.
Regulus watched him from the chair, wrists still bound, posture infuriatingly relaxed for someone who had been dead a day ago and kidnapped by a tyrant with a god complex. He had one ankle hooked around the chair leg. Head tilted. Mouth curled.
Tom stopped midâpace and lifted his wand.
A pulse of magic lashed outânot Tomâs usual sharp, cutting spellwork, but something deeper, denser. It rolled like thunder instead of slicing like a blade. The air bowed.
Tom inhaled sharply, eyes lighting up.
âThere,â he said, reverent. âDo you feel that?â
Regulus hummed. âMm. Feels like you borrowed a suit two sizes too big.â
Tom ignored the jab, turning his wrist, experimenting. The spell warped, deepened, threaded with something unmistakably old. Black magicânot dark, not cursedâancestral. House magic. The kind that remembered names carved into stone and bloodlines bred like weapons.
âBlack magic doesnât behave like ordinary magic,â Tom said, almost to himself. âIt doesnât obey. It recognizes.â
âIt recognizes me,â Regulus replied sweetly. âYouâre just the bloke wearing my skin.â
Tomâs jaw tightened. He flicked his wand again. The wards flared, answering himâhesitantly, but they answered.
âSoon,â Tom said, turning back to him, eyes bright with fevered certainty, âIâll be up there. The one and only true god.â
Regulus snorted.
âNo more playing house,â Tom went on, voice rising, carried by the room. âOnce theyâre devout, I wonât need a squad. Iâll climb the stairway up to power, live on every frequency. I always knew the man theyâd be praying to was going to be me.â
He stopped in front of Regulus, towering, smug, triumphant.
âOnce I get up thereââ
âYou will fuck it up!â Regulus cut in, cheerful as a knife.
Tom blinked.
Regulus leaned back against the chair. âJust thought Iâd save you the suspense.â
âJust watchââ
âYouâll never fill your cup,â Regulus continued, voice lazy, cruel. âYouâre broken from the start. No victoryâs ever going to be enough for you.â
The silence that followed was thick. Dangerous.
Tomâs smile returned slowly. Carefully.
âWeâll see whoâs smiling in the end,â he said softly. âYou can say your last âI told you soâ while I slit your throat.â
Regulus tilted his head. âYou do love dramatics. Is this the part where you expect me to be impressed?â
âI expect you to understand,â Tom snapped. He turned away again, stalking the room, gesturing as he spoke. âYou were the only one who figured it out. The only one clever enough to see what Iâd done. Horcruxes. Fragmentation. Immortality. You saw it.â
âAnd I destroyed it,â Regulus said. âYouâre welcome.â
âThatâs exactly why I need you.â Tom whirled back. âEven without magicâeven drainedâyouâre still dangerous. Academic prodigy. Athlete. Social darling. Charisma dripping off you like sin. People follow you without realizing theyâre doing it.â
âHard not to,â Regulus said. âIâm devastating.â
Tomâs gaze dragged over himâslow, assessing, irritated by how true that was.
âI donât need your loyalty,â Tom said. âI need your alignment. Your influence. Your face. The heir of the most powerful house in Britain standing at my side.â
âIâd rather chew glass.â
âI can break you.â
Regulus smiled wider. âYouâre fifty. Iâm eighteen. And youâre pacing like a man begging his ex to take him back.â
Tom stopped.
The room felt smaller.
âI will use you,â Tom said quietly. âI will learn you. Your magic. Your mind. Iâll carve out whatever I need until you fit.â
âAnd Iâll still be better than you,â Regulus replied. âImagine that. No magic. Still winning.â
Tom stepped close again. Too close. Fingers brushed Regulusâs shoulder, then his throat, thumb pressing lightly under his jaw, forcing him to look up.
âYouâre everything I should have been,â Tom murmured, almost furious. âBorn into power. Loved without earning it. Brilliant without trying.â
âAnd youâre everything I never want to become.â
Their eyes locked. Old hatred. New tension. Something sharp and electric threading between them that neither acknowledged out loud.
âYou could rule with me,â Tom said. âWe could remake the world.â
Regulus laughed. Soft. Mocking. Unafraid.
âYou donât want a partner,â he said. âYou want a mirror that tells you youâre enough.â
Tomâs grip tightened for half a secondâthen loosened.
âYouâll come around,â he said, turning away again, voice smooth as poison. âEveryone does.â
Regulus watched him go, eyes bright, smile sharp, utterly unbroken.
And somewhere deep in the chamber, the old Black magic pulsedâpatient, watchfulâwaiting to see which of them would crack first.
Tom Riddle paced like a storm trapped in a bottle, restless energy rattling every inch of the chamber.
He was muttering, half to Regulus, half to himself, and fully to the war he saw unfolding in his mind like a perfect, violent tapestry.
âThe Ministry will fall,â he said, more declaration than theory. âNot all at once. Bit by bit. The public wonât even see it. Itâll rot from the inside, the way all good things do.â
Regulus arched a brow, lips curled. âBold of you to assume theyâre any good to begin with.â
Tom waved the comment off. âYaxleyâs already embedded. Iâve got Dawlishâs loyalties locked by debt and blackmail. Mulciberâs father is funding weapon shipments. Travers is organizing foreign wand smugglers.â
He turned to Regulus suddenly, eyes gleaming with calculation.
âI could use you at the next meeting.â
Regulus, bound to the iron chair, smiled lazily like he was lounging on a silk chaise at Malfoyâs estate.
âOh, love, you already are.â
Tom ignored the comment, resuming his pacing, hands clasped behind his back.
âYouâd be ideal,â he muttered. âPerfect.â
He started listing things, walking faster now, manic precision in every word:
âUse your looks. You draw attention even in silenceâlike a flame. Could send you to charm diplomats. Seduce the sons of politicians. Whisper in the ears of foreign ambassadors.â
Regulus widened his eyes, mock-earnest. âOh, daddy, you want me to be your little honey trap?â
Tom pausedâstumbled, more like it.
His jaw clenched. âI want you useful.â
âSay âhoney trapâ just once. Câmon. Do it. It'll be so cute.â
Tom growled and turned away.
Regulus snorted, delighted.
âYou could run training camps,â Tom snapped. âYou were a star Seeker, werenât you? Fast. Sharp. Merciless. You could build an elite guard.â
âOut of what?â Regulus asked, leaning forward as much as the chains would allow. âInbred sociopaths with half a brain and three full Daddy issues?â
âYouâre in no position to mock anyoneâs daddy issues.â
Regulus grinned wide. âTouchĂ©.â
Tom ignored him again, resuming his internal spiral.
âAcademicsâplansâstrategy,â he listed under his breath. âPureblood networks. The Sacred Twenty-Eight. The Blacks command everything. And if I had you at my sideââ
ââyou could attend every Gala and be the prettiest girl at the party.â
âI could crush the resistance,â Tom snapped, whirling to face him.
âBaby,â Regulus purred, âyouâre already crushing on me.â
Tom stared.
Just stared.
Processing.
He blinked once.
Then again.
Then, slowly, painfully, realization dawned. And fury came with it.
âYouâre toying with me,â he said through gritted teeth.
Regulus crossed his legs where he could, lounging in the restraints like they were velvet ropes and he was center stage.
âYouâre just now catching up?â he cooed.
âI will break you.â
Regulus tilted his head, gaze coy. âYouâd have to take me to dinner first.â
Tom turned, growling, hands flexing like he couldnât decide whether to throttle Regulus or fling something across the room. A jar did levitate brieflyâtrembled midair like it, too, wasnât sure what the hell was happeningâand then gently dropped back down.
âYouâre a child,â Tom snapped.
âIâm eighteen,â Regulus said, smug as hell. âAnd clearly Iâm still too old for your emotional maturity level.â
Tomâs eyes narrowed to slits.
âYouâre smug now. But youâll tire. Youâll slip. Iâll find the angle. The chink in the armor. Everyone has one.â
âOh, Iâve got chinks,â Regulus said, fluttering his lashes, voice dripping with filth. âTheyâre just not the kind you can handle.â
There was a clangâTomâs fist slamming into the wall.
A thin crack spidered across the stone.
âI hate you,â he hissed.
âNo, darling.â Regulus licked his bottom lip. âYou wish you did.â
Tom was breathing hard now. Like heâd just come off a battlefield.
He turned back to Regulus, hands trembling with the effort it took not to hex the smirk off that infuriating face.
âYouâre wasting your breath,â Regulus said, feigning a yawn. âYouâll never get me on your side.â
Tomâs voice dropped to a cold whisper.
âYou will stand beside me.â
âAnd what?â Regulus said with a grin. âBe your arm candy? Your death queen? Your little wicked consort?â
He licked his teeth and added, âYou could dress me in black. Put me in heels. Make me your dark bride.â
Tom stared.
Something short-circuited behind his eyes.
Thenâ
âGET OUT!â he roared at no one in particular.
There was no one else there. Just him. And Regulus. And the echo of Regulusâs laughter, spiraling through the chamber like music in a cathedral.
Loud.
Unbothered.
Victorious.
Regulus leaned back, smiling like the devil in the middle of a coup.
âGods,â he sighed, eyes glinting. âIâm gonna have so much fun breaking you.â
Tom Riddle was circling again, like a snake skimming the edges of its preyâs cage, tasting the air.
Only now he wasnât pacing aimlesslyâhe was studying. Calculating. Eyes locked to the figure in the chair, body held tight by enchanted rope, black hair messy but regal, dark eyes shining with the kind of wild mischief that should never have survived death. He was watching the problem.
Regulus Arcturus Black. His most precious complication.
ââŠTorture wonât work. Too proud,â Riddle muttered under his breath, barely audible. âBreak the body and heâll just get cockier. Masochistic little shitâŠâ
Regulus was barely listening. His wrists were twisting subtly, thumb hooked under the edge of a loop. The rope gave just the faintest shift. One strand loosened. Just a little moreâ
Tom walked past him, still talking.
âMaybe isolation. Starve the ego. Cut him off from sound, sight, touch. Turn the charisma inwardâmake him crave attention.â He paused. âNo. Too risky. Heâd start monologuing to the rats and still think heâs winning.â
Regulus rolled his eyes and flexed his thumb again, rotating his hand like a joint in a lock. The rope shifted once more. Almost there. If he could just twistâ
âHumiliation?â Tom muttered. âNo⊠heâd enjoy that. Would taunt me while naked in chains.â
âYou say that like itâs a punishment,â Regulus murmured under his breath, still not looking up.
Tom froze mid-thought.
A long silence passed. Then:
âSeduction,â he said suddenly. âHeâs too sexual for his own good. Probably expects everyone to want him. Heâs used to control.â
He turned.
Regulus was still struggling. Still distracted. Almost had itâ
A hand slammed around his jaw.
Cold fingers. Pale knuckles. That unmistakable scent of expensive parchment and rot.
Regulus flinched back, but the hand tightened, forcing his face upward.
Tom was grinning.
âOh?â Regulus purred faintly, voice unsteady from surprise. âYou finally working up the courage to kiss me?â
But before he could say moreâbefore he could tug free, or twist his hand completely outâ
PSSSSHT.
A sharp hiss of magic erupted from Tomâs wand. A silver mist blasted into Regulusâs face, cold and heavy, thick as perfume, laced with something that stung the eyes and numbed the brain.
He jerked, gasping.
And then blinked.
And blinked again.
ââŠWhat the fuck wasââ
His words stumbled over themselves. The sentence broke apart in his mouth like glass underfoot. He felt dizzy. Cold in his spine, warm in his skin. His lips parted, then closed again. Head swimming.
Tom was already leaning in.
So close.
So soft.
âYou donât want to fight me, darling,â Tom whispered, tone suddenly silken and low, like venom wrapped in satin. âYou want to serve me.â
Regulus twitched.
âIâŠâ
âYou want to stand beside me. Worship me. Be my fiercest believer. My shadow. My flame.â
A fog settled over Regulusâs mind like a blanket dropped over a caged bird.
âI⊠donâtâŠâ he murmured.
âYou admire me,â Tom whispered, brushing Regulusâs hair back. âYou respect me. You need me.â
âNoâŠâ
âYou ache to make me proud. You crave my approval. You want to earn your place at my feet, eyes full of awe, breath catching when I enter the room.â
Regulus whimpered faintly, body slackening in the chair.
âYouâll be mine,â Tom hissed, eyes gleaming. âClingy. Devoted. Obedient. Flushed and flustered by my presence. Youâll beg to serve the Death Eaters. Youâll demand it. Youâll thank me for the privilege.â
The mist hung heavy in the air, sparkling as it began to fade. Regulusâs head lolled, lashes fluttering, lips parted just enough to show the barest edge of teeth. His eyes rolled slightly, unfocused, confused.
âYouâll tell the others. Youâll speak of me like a god. Youâll say Iâm everything. Youâll kneel. Youâll kneel,â Tom breathed, feverish with it now, pacing around the chair, voice cooing, reverent, deranged. âAnd when you wake, youâll feel it. Youâll feel your purpose. Youâll smile when you hear my name.â
Regulus gave one last twitch.
Then slumped.
Unconscious.
Breathing shallow. Skin flushed. Body limp in the ropes heâd nearly undone.
Tom stood still.
Staring down at him.
Then he began to laugh.
Not softly.
Not politely.
But wild and sharp, echoing off the stone walls like thunder in a tomb.
The kind of laugh that heralded the rise of gods. Or the fall of kingdoms.
The mist settled.
The chamber pulsed with ancient magic.
And Regulus Blackâheir to the most powerful house in Britainâdreamt of silver eyes and whispered orders in the dark.
Regulus woke to silk.
Not the suffocating cold of stone. Not chains. Not the metallic taste of old magic on his tongue. Silkâcool and sliding against his skin, perfumed faintly with myrrh and something darker, richer. Incense, maybe. Or blood, if one knew how to listen for it.
He groaned and rolled onto his side. The room swayed.
ââfuck,â he hissed, clutching his head as a spike of dizziness lanced through him. âMerlinâs tits, what did youââ
His voice echoed too softly. The ceiling above him was high and draped, fabric falling in lazy arcs like a tent pitched for royalty. Candlelight glowed warm and gold. This wasnât a cell.
This was a bedchamber.
He pushed himself upright, blinking hard. His handsâunboundâcaught the light. Rings glittered on his fingers. Bracelets chimed at his wrists. A collarâornate, dark metal etched with sigilsârested cool at his throat.
He looked down.
ââŠYou have got to be kidding me.â
Gone were his robes. Gone were his boots. In their place: a cropped top of sheer black fabric, bell sleeves split open at the sides; lowârise trousers that flowed like smoke and clung tight at the ankles; bare feet on woven rugs; chains and gems and a veil pooled beside him on the bed.
He dragged a hand down his face. âRiddle, you absolute pervert.â
The dizziness faded to a low hum. Annoyance replaced it. That familiar, razorâsharp edge slid back into place.
Regulus swung his legs over the side of the bed, stood, swayed once, then steadied. He stalked toward the door, jaw set, irritation buzzing under his skin like static.
The corridor beyond was dim and winding, lit by torches set into black stone. He moved quietly, senses sharpening, slipping into that old, practiced stillness. He was good at this. Always had been.
Thenâ
thump.
His back hit something solid. Warm. Broad.
He whirled, already snarlingâ
âand froze.
Tom Riddle stood there.
Tall. Immaculate. Dark robes pressed and perfect. One brow lifted in mild amusement, eyes alight with something sharp and satisfied.
Regulusâs gaze glazed.
Just for a heartbeat.
The world tilted. The hum in his chest surged, then settled, rearranging itself into something newâsomething aligned. His breath hitched. His shoulders went slack.
Tom didnât move. He waited.
Regulus blinked.
His eyes cleared.
He gasped softlyâthen smiled.
Not defiant. Not mocking.
Coy.
âOh,â he murmured, voice suddenly warmer, breathier. âThere you are.â
Tomâs breath caught, just barely.
Regulus stepped forward, brushing his fingers along Tomâs arm as if drawn there by instinct, then curled both arms around it and hugged it tight to his chest. He pressed close, cheek against Tomâs shoulder, lashes fluttering as his cheeks flushed a soft, dangerous pink.
Tom shuddered when Regulus shifted, one of Tomâs hands slidingâalmost without conscious thoughtâto rest between Regulusâs thighs, grounding him there. Regulus leaned into it, clinging closer, a quiet, pleased sound slipping from his throat.
Tomâs arm wrapped around him fully now, possessive and smug.
It had worked.
âRegulus,â Tom said, testing. âDo you know who I am?â
Regulus tilted his head up, eyes bright. âYouâre my lord,â he said easily. âMy cause. The future. The only one clever enough to remake this world properly.â
Tom smiled, slow and sharp.
âAnd where do your loyalties lie?â
âWith you,â Regulus replied without hesitation, tightening his grip. âWith the Dark. With what weâre building. Iâll burn anyone who stands in your way.â
There it was. Fierce. Righteous. Still himâbut pointed in a new direction.
Tomâs chest rose with a satisfied breath.
âAnd if I command you?â
Regulusâs lips curved, playful and wicked. âThen Iâll do it,â he said, batting his lashes. âAnd probably look better doing it than you.â
Tom huffed a laugh, stunned despite himself.
âYouâre still mouthy.â
âObviously,â Regulus said, fingers curling into Tomâs sleeve. âI just⊠know who deserves it now.â
They stood too close. Forehead to forehead. Breath mingling.
Regulus looked upâand then, without warning, rose on his toes and kissed him.
Soft at first. Testing.
Tom froze for half a secondâthen groaned, hand tightening at Regulusâs waist as he melted into it, returning the kiss with a hunger he hadnât expected. Their mouths moved together, unhurried but charged, breath warm, the world narrowing to the press of bodies and the crackle of power between them.
Regulus relaxed fully against him, one hand gripping Tomâs arm, the other slidingâslow, deliberateâacross Tomâs stomach beneath the robes, tracing heat and tension and promise.
Tom deepened the kiss, tongue brushing, holding Regulus close like something claimed and cherished all at once.
When they finally parted, Regulus stayed tucked against him, smiling up with flushed cheeks and parted lips.
âSee?â he murmured. âTold you Iâd be useful.â
Tom rested his forehead against his, victorious and breathless.
âYes,â he said softly. âYou will be.â
It had been days.
Long enough for the magic to root itself like ivy in the walls of Regulusâs mind. Long enough for the haze to clear and for the certainty to remain. He still smirked the same. Still teased and purred and drawled with that sharp little tongue. But now he meant it when he pressed his lips to Tomâs palm. Now he meant it when he curled up in the older manâs lap and cooed against his throat, murmuring about destiny and domination in the same breath.
There had been no snap-back, no fight, no rebellion. The spell hadnât just taken. It had thrived.
And Tom Riddle was nothing short of glorious with it.
He had tested Regulus, again and again. Ordering him to ignore, obey, kneel, sass, command, question. Regulus had done it all, fiercely and flawlessly, still every inch the arrogant, brilliant boy heâd always beenâbut now aligned. Loyal. Obsessed.
Devoted.
Which made the timing perfect.
The next Death Eater gathering was being held in the ritual chamber beneath the forest chapelâneutral ground, but sacred. All the Inner Circle would be there. And tonight, for the first time, theyâd see what their Lord had claimed.
Tom stood in front of the mirror with Regulus nestled behind him, arms around his waist, nose buried under the collar of his robes.
âShall I wear the veil again?â Regulus purred.
Tomâs lip twitched.
âNo. Let them see your face when they fall to their knees.â
He turned and dragged silk and gold across Regulusâs bare skin. Black and silver, sheer and decadent: cropped, sleeveless top that tied at the front, more jewelry coiling down his arms, tight bangles and open sleeves trailing like water. Loose silk trousers, cinched at the ankles, soft and floating. No shoes. Anklets instead. His feet were marked in ash and rune.
A collar of carved obsidian clasped around his throat.
A sigil had been added to it.
One only old magic could see.
The Binding had been done in private. Sacred words. Cut palms. Kisses across hearts. Regulus, smiling as he repeated his vows in perfect ancient Latin. Tom, murmuring his claim, his magic drinking deep from the connection until he could feel Regulus like a second skin.
The House of Black was now his. Through blood. Through bond. Through Regulus.
It was time.
They Apparated to the chamber steps, Tomâs arm wrapped tight around Regulusâs waist, his husband pressed close at his side. The hall was already fullâDeath Eaters in dark robes, all heads bowed toward the center as they waited for their Lord to appear.
When the doors opened, every voice stilled.
Every. Single. One.
And then they saw him.
Regulus Arcturus Black.
Alive.
And not just aliveâbut radiant. Adorned like royalty, wrapped in shadow and silk, glowing from within. Head high. Collar gleaming. Tom Riddle beside him, hand resting possessively on his hip, leading him forward like a god with his most beloved offering.
Gasps. Stares. Crushed whispers.
âWhat the fuckââ âThatâs Black, thatâs fucking Regulusââ âWasnât heâ? Didnât heâ?â âHeâsâmarriedââ
Lucius Malfoyâs jaw dropped slightly. âOh, bloody hell,â he whispered, rubbing his temples. âHow the fuck am I going to tell NarcissaâŠâ
Barty Crouch Jr made a choked, wheezing laugh. âHeâs wearing bells!â
Evan Rosier actually took a step backward.
The Lestranges were frozen, wide-eyed.
Bellatrix, however, beamed.
âMy baby cousin!â she crooned, practically skipping over to press her hands to Regulusâs cheeks. âYou look gorgeous. Oh, you wicked little minxâI knew you had it in you.â
Tom sat in the central throne-like seat at the head of the chamber, dragging Regulus with himânot to the seat beside, but onto his lap. He perched there with effortless grace, one arm around Tomâs neck, one around his waist, legs curled elegantly over his thigh.
Tomâs hand rested low on Regulusâs stomach. The other dropped to his thigh, fingers spreading possessively over the silk.
The room watched, stunned.
âAs you can see,â Tom said, his voice smooth and low, âthe rumors of Regulus Blackâs demise were⊠premature.â
âAnd very sexy,â Regulus added with a wink.
Several Death Eaters looked like they were short-circuiting.
âRegulus is not only alive,â Tom continued, âbut mine. Bound to me by the oldest rites. Loyal to the cause. His gifts now serve us.â
âIâll be overseeing your training,â Regulus said sweetly, legs crossing as he leaned forward in Tomâs lap. âSome of you are frankly embarrassing in a duel. Expect bruises.â
âRecruitment as well,â Tom added. âHeâll be assisting with diplomatic missions, negotiations, andâŠâ He glanced down, smirking. âStrategic persuasion.â
Regulus purred, brushing a hand over Tomâs shoulder. âSeduction, darling. Just say seduction.â
There was a strangled sound from Avery.
âHowever,â Tom said darkly, voice dropping, âhe is not to be touched. Not looked at. Not dreamed of.â
His hand squeezed Regulusâs thigh. Hard.
Regulus gasped, head tipping back with a breathy whimper.
Tomâs hand dragged that thigh up over his own, spreading him across his lap.
âI do the taking,â Tom growled.
âAnd I do the moaning,â Regulus sighed, nuzzling into his neck. âAnd the teasing. And the demanding.â
âI should gag you.â
âYou tried. I liked it too much.â
âMerlinâs fucking balls,â muttered Mulciber.
âDoes Narcissa know about this?â Lucius asked no one.
âNo,â Bellatrix said, grinning ear to ear. âAnd Iâm not going to tell her.â
Snape looked like he might vomit.
âIâve never been so confused in my life,â Peter whispered to Karkaroff.
Regulus, meanwhile, was lazily tracing the edge of Tomâs robes with one hand and raising the other to speak.
âIf I may?â he said, all polite and poisonous.
Tom nodded, amused.
Regulus turned to the rest of the room. âYour current infiltration plans are laughable. Whoever thought up the âMinistry janitorâ idea needs to be launched into the sun.â
Crabbe Sr looked offended.
Regulus continued, âInstead, I suggest we utilize Diagon Alleyâs upcoming Gala and target the St. Mungoâs Board of Governors. Several of them are purists and very corruptible.â
The room went silent.
Then Dolohov nodded, slowly. âThat⊠would actually work.â
Tom smiled.
âYou see?â he murmured, lips brushing Regulusâs ear. âUseful.â
Regulus leaned in, smiling wide, proud and coy and dangerous.
âAnything for you, my Lord.â
The meeting had long since devolved into glorious chaos.
Plans were being discussed, sureâbut barely. The real focus was Regulus Black, lounging like a cat in his Dark Lordâs lap, smug as ever, dressed like a sin-soaked altar boy and armed with a venomous smile.
And the Death Eaters?
They were spiraling.
Evan Rosier kept giggling like a madman, practically vibrating in his seat. Every time Regulus shifted his legs across Riddleâs thigh, Evan wheezed louder. Barty Jr had resorted to elbowing him repeatedly, eyes flicking between the newly devoted prince of darkness and the shattered psyches of everyone around them with a grin that said he might combust.
Lucius Malfoy was sweating.
Visibly.
He sat three seats down, dabbing his forehead with a monogrammed handkerchief and muttering furiously under his breath.
âIâm going to have to tell Narcissa. Iâm going to die.â
Across the table, Rodolphus Lestrange whispered, âJust lie.â
âLie? About her baby cousin straddling the Dark Lord in silk trousers? Wearing bells?â
âShe likes bells.â
âIâm going to die.â
Bellatrix, meanwhile, was thriving.
âMy darling baby cousin,â she crooned, clapping her hands as Regulus suggested assassinating a governor by slipping powdered banshee bone into his morning tea. âSo inventive! I knew youâd be special.â
Regulus winked at her over his shoulder.
And all the while, Tom sat at the head of the table, one hand draped lazily around Regulusâs waist, the other still anchored low on his thigh. His expression was pure satisfactionârighteous, smug, possessive.
And thenâ
It happened.
Crabbe Sr grunted from the far end of the table, arms crossed, scowling like heâd swallowed something sour. âHeâs not a fighter,â he muttered, clearly thinking no one would hear. âWhatâs he going to train? Fashion duels?â
The room stilled.
Every. Single. Person. Froze.
Tomâs eyes cut to Regulus. He didnât move, didnât speak. Just nudged his chin slightly toward the source of the insult.
âGo.â
Regulus perked up like a dog hearing a bell.
His entire demeanor snapped from silken flirtation to soldier in motion. He slid from Tomâs lap, knees first, then rolled half across the meeting table in one graceful twistâspilling a goblet of firewhisky and kicking over a stack of maps in the process.
ââwait, what is heââ someone began.
Regulus cartwheeled.
Right over the stunned heads of the Lestranges.
Then flipped into the air, twisted sideways mid-air in a perfect spiral, andâ
SLAM.
His legs wrapped around Crabbe Srâs neck in a brutal scissor kick.
The man barely had time to blink before his entire body was yanked off the ground and crashed onto the stone floor like a sack of bricks.
There was a deafening silence.
Regulus didnât pause.
He wrestled Crabbe down with the skill of someone who had very clearly been training in secret for years. Hands snapped into motionâone arm twisted behind Crabbeâs back, the other pinned under Regulusâs knee. He leaned forward, breathing evenly, face right next to the older manâs ear.
âI could break both your shoulders right now,â he said sweetly. âOr just one, if youâre feeling repentant.â
Crabbe didnât speak. He wheezed.
Regulus smirked and looked up toward the table, where every single Death Eater had either backed up or gone completely still.
âWell?â he called. âAm I weak?â
Someone coughed in terror.
Tom stood, one hand raised.
âReturn.â
Regulus instantly perked up.
He released Crabbe with a little shove and a playful tap on the shoulder, bounced to his feet like a gymnast finishing a routine, and skipped back toward the table.
Everyone watched, gobsmacked, as he beamed and launched himself back into Riddleâs arms like nothing had happened.
Tom caught him easily, pulled him flush against his chest, and wrapped both arms tightly around his waist.
Regulus hummed happily and clung back, head resting against Tomâs shoulder, looking far too pleased for someone who had just assaulted a war general with his thighs.
âGood boy,â Tom murmured, kissing the top of his head.
The room lost its mind.
Evan collapsed backward in his seat, wheezing, âI canâtâI canât breatheâhe just crushed Crabbe with his thighs and cooed.â
âIs he purring?â Karkaroff whispered, eyes wide.
âOf course he is,â Barty grinned. âThatâs the Dark Lordâs husband.â
Snape looked pale. Bellatrix clapped again, delighted. âThatâs my favorite cousin.â
Crabbe Sr groaned from the floor, still unable to move his arms.
Tom just smiled into Regulusâs hair.
And Regulusâsmug, brilliant, gleaming with powerâsmiled back with the satisfaction of a boy who knew he had just become the most dangerous, worshipped creature in the entire room.
It had been twenty-three days since the Ministry fell.
Twenty-three days since the last great fire swallowed the Department of Mysteries and the Dark Mark curled itself around the rooftop like a crown.
Twenty-three days since Regulus Black, declared dead in absentia, had emerged from shadow at his husbandâs sideâsmiling like a prince at his coronation, eyes glittering beneath a jeweled veil, hand in Tom Riddleâs.
The magical world had barely begun to understand what that meant.
And tonight, they were going to choke on it.
The gala was held at the newly renovated Atriumâa palace of enchanted marble and obsidian that still carried the scent of smoke and revolution. The Fountain of Magical Brethren had been replaced with a single obsidian monolith, etched with runes in every language. It pulsed faintly, alive with power.
Around it, the elite of the new world order gathered: purebloods who'd chosen survival, diplomats with trembling smiles, foreign delegates sizing up their new overlord. The Prophet was there, enchanted cameras blinking, quills skittering across golden scrolls. Reporters whispered.
"Heâs actually aliveâ" "Look at himâwhat is he wearingâ" "Thatâs the Dark Lordâs husband."
Regulus was on display.
Draped in deep crimson and gold, cropped robes lined with runes and stitched from sheer fabric that caught the light and clung just enough to hint. His sleeves trailed behind him like fire. His waist was wrapped in a golden chain-belt, hips moving with decadent precision. Rings flashed on his fingers, his collar was carved obsidian etched with silver.
No shoes.
Just bells and magic and bare, inked feet against the Ministry floor.
And every step he took was with Tomâarm in arm, Tom in full ceremonial robes, pale hand resting firmly on Regulusâs lower back as they cut through the crowd like a knife through silk.
They passed through pockets of stunned silence and frenzied whispers.
Tom greeted dignitaries with cool charm, nodding, smiling thinly.
Regulus followed, trailing fingertips along glasses and jacket buttons and the edge of one trembling ambassadorâs tie. He didnât speak unless spoken to. But he smiled.
He smiled like he knew the world was his playground now.
Like he'd already won.
Later, once the crowd had been fed and boozed and softened with flattery and threat, Tom returned to the center of the ballroomâRegulus still tucked into his side, lips near his ear.
âAre you ready?â he murmured.
Regulusâs grin stretched.
âAlways.â
Tom stepped forward and raised a hand. Music stilled. Conversation faltered. Heads turned.
âMy honored allies,â he said, voice echoing through the vast enchanted room. âTonight, I offer more than speeches and wine. I offer you a visionâthe face of the future you are now a part of.â
He looked to Regulus.
âShow them.â
And then Tom stepped back.
Regulus stepped forward.
The band started behind him, slow and smoky, all strings and velvet brass. The light dimmed, magic focusing its gaze on the singular form at the center of the marble floor.
Regulus closed his eyes, tilted his head back, and sang.
His voice was soft at first, warm and winding, like silk sliding down bare shoulders.
"Itâs been so very long⊠since Lady Luck kissed you..." "Still, you listen for her song, and pray that she missed youâŠ"
The room swayed. Literallyâmagic rippling like smoke through the air as eyes locked onto him, some wide with shock, others hungry with fascination.
"Dead inside 'cause you know itâs all pretendâŠ" "Close your eyes 'cause youâre goinâ off the deep end againâŠ"
Regulus stepped forward, slow and sure, hips rolling in rhythm. His fingers brushed down the shoulder of one high-ranking Romanian diplomat, who choked softly on his wine.
"Youâre livinâ for the rush⊠for that royal flushâŠ" "But you take what you can getâŠ"
He dragged a finger along the edge of a table as he passed, circling another cluster of nobles, dancing on the balls of his feet.
"You play your final ace⊠for a pretty faceâŠ" "Tastes like scotch⊠and cigarettesâŠ"
A swirl, a spin, eyes glinting. He moved like water, like fire, like he was made to be watched.
"And you canât help fallinâ, goinâ all inâ" "Though your odds are bleakâŠ" "âTil you break your losinâ streakâŠ"
He smiled then. That coy, knowing, dangerous smile.
Gasps echoed through the room.
And still he sang.
"Youâre livinâ for the rush, for that royal flushâŠ" "But the next best thing will doâŠ" "You wanna spend your chips⊠on these rosy lipsâŠ"
He stopped in front of a particularly stubborn councilman from the French Ministry. Lowered to a crouch. Breathed the next line into his ear.
"Tryinâ to get me next to youâŠ"
The man shuddered. Visibly.
Regulus stood. Slow. Languid. Smirking.
"âCause you canât help needinâ⊠to believe inâŠ" "Findinâ what you seekâŠ"
The final note came soft. Sweet. Deadly.
"âTil you break your losinââŠ" "Good luck out there, boys~"
The room exploded.
Cheers. Applause. Shocked laughter. A few glasses shattered from dropped hands. And dozens of eyes turned to Tom Riddleâoffering hands, promises, allegiances. The resistance in the French Ministry folded. The Swiss delegates asked to speak in private. The Irish envoy declared the future belonged to him.
It worked.
Regulus made his way back through the parting crowd, eyes low, lips curled, hips swinging with every step. Tom was already waiting at the edge of the floor, arms open, face dark with hunger and pride.
Regulus reached him and fell into his arms, arms around his neck, body flush against him, legs almost curling up. Tom caught him. Held him tight.
âYouâre unreal,â he whispered.
âIâm yours,â Regulus replied, brushing his lips against his jaw. âDid I do good?â
Tom kissed him. Not sweet. Not polite.
Possessive.
The Prophet got the photo, of course. It would be on every front page tomorrow.
âTHE DARK LORDâS STAR: REGULUS BLACK RETURNSâ âHOUSE OF BLACK UNITED WITH POWERâ âTHE DARK LORDâS HUSBAND BREAKS THE WORLDâS HEARTSâ
And behind all of it, Regulus smiled.
A little prince of shadow and songâdripping in magic, full of fury and fire, kissed by darkness and kissed by power.
And absolutely in control.
The air in the drawing room was thick with tension and sweat.
Witches and wizards sat crammed around the long, dark table, stacks of parchment and half-drunk tea cups cluttering the surface, while soot-streaked maps of Britain hovered above them. Pins glowed red in all the wrong placesâmore each day. Reports were scattered, voices rising and falling, battles lost, friends gone missing. Another safehouse compromised. Another raid that ended with bodies on the floor.
âIt doesnât make sense,â Marlene McKinnon said, frowning, wand tapping against the rim of her cup. âWeâre smarter than this. Faster. Weâve got Minnie and Moody running opsâhow are they still ahead of us every damn time?â
Moody grunted in agreement, the scars on his face twitching with irritation. âTheyâve been anticipatinâ every bloody move. Like theyâre inside the room.â
âWeâve already swept for spies,â Emmeline Vance muttered. âDouble-checked communication charms. Nothing.â
âThen itâs not us,â said Benjy Fenwick grimly. âItâs them. Theyâve got someone smarter.â
James Potter leaned back in his chair, dark eyes narrowed behind smudged glasses. âTheyâve always had a brain behind the brawn. We just didnât think theyâd use it like this.â
âMaybe itâs Snape,â Dedalus Diggle suggested from the far end. âHe was a bloody prodigy. Real quiet, all the timeâbut clever. Top marks.â
âSnapeâs not a leader,â Lily said sharply. âHeâs a follower. Always has been.â
There were murmurs of agreement.
Hestia Jones sighed, flipping through a stack of crumpled editions of The Daily Prophet. âThere has to be someone coordinating it all. The timing. The strategy. Itâs tooââ Her sentence stopped short.
Her eyes went wide.
Then pale.
She slowly lowered the page she was reading.
â...I may know why,â she said, voice hollow.
Every head turned.
âWhat?â Sirius barked, already halfway out of his chair. âWhat is it?â
Hestia said nothing. Just slid the paper across the table.
Everyone leaned in.
And saw it.
The headline stretched across the full-page spread, glossy and cruel:
THE DARK LORDâS STAR: REGULUS BLACK RETURNS The Dark Prince of the House of Black LivesâAnd Heâs Loyal to Him.
Beneath it: the photo. Front and center.
Regulus.
Alive.
Aliveâand stunning, wrapped in crimson and black silk, pressed against Lord Voldemortâs side like a prized jewel. Smiling. Performing. Glowing.
The enchanted image showed him in motionâspinning, flirting, singing on a marble stage while ministers and warlords clapped and stared, and the Dark Lord looked on with open, unholy pride.
The room erupted.
âWHATââ âREGULUS? BLACK?!â âHeâs ALIVE?!â âTHATâS YOUR BROTHERâ!â âHEâS MARRIED TO VOLDEMORT?!â âWHAT THE FUCK?!â
Sirius shot to his feet, face pale as bone, mouth hanging open. âNoâno, thatâs notâheâs DEAD, Iâheââ His voice broke.
âThatâs not a glamour,â Remus said, staring in horror. âThatâs him. Thatâs really him.â
Marlene had both hands in her hair. âHeâs singing. Heâs dancing. Heâs FLIRTING WITH AMBASSADORS?!â
âAnd Voldemortâs looking at him like heâs the fucking moon,â Fabian Prewett added in disgust.
âWhy didnât we know?â Dorcas said, voice cold. âThe Ministry declared him missing months ago. Assumed dead. There was no sign of him.â
âThat was before they controlled the press,â Moody growled. âThis was deliberate. They hid him.â
Sirius was still standing, staring at the page like it had slapped him. âHe⊠he ran off when he was sixteen. I never⊠I never knew what happened to him. I thoughtâŠâ
James reached out, laying a hand on his shoulder.
âHeâs not the kid you remember anymore.â
âHeâs a weapon,â Lily said, voice flat. âLook at this.â
She flipped to the continuation on page twoâanother photo, this time of Regulus wrestling a Death Eater to the floor, locking him down with bare hands and a sneer, before rushing back to Voldemortâs lap like a pet.
And below thatânew reports:
New Death Eater Commander to Oversee Training, Recruitment, Diplomacy Regulus Black to lead elite divisions, oversee charmwork, and infiltrate resistance cells.
âThey gave him everything,â Remus whispered.
âHeâs already winning,â Emmeline added.
Benjy rubbed his face. âThatâs why weâre losing. Heâs not just a figurehead. Heâs the brain.â
Moodyâs expression twisted into something darker. âIf heâs in charge of strategy⊠the raids, the ambushes, the propaganda⊠then thatâs why weâve been walking into traps. Why every safehouse gets sniffed out.â
âWhy weâre bleeding,â Marlene said.
âThen we have to stop him,â Dorcas said, voice firm.
âOr turn him,â Lily offered, though her tone was strained. âIf he can be reasoned with, persuadedââ
âNo.â Siriusâs voice was cold. Final. âHeâs too far gone.â
âWe donât know that,â James countered, though even he looked doubtful. âWe donât know what happened to him. What made him⊠that.â
âMaybe it was always him,â Fabian said grimly. âWe just never saw it.â
âEither way,â Moody snapped, âwe have two options. Recruit himâor kill him.â
The table went quiet.
A beat passed.
Sirius exhaled, shaking. âIf heâs whatâs keeping them together⊠If we take him off the boardâŠâ
Remus nodded. âIt could change everything.â
Across the room, the Prophet sat open, the photo of Regulus replaying in an endless loop.
Himâalive.
Himâbeloved.
Himâtheirs.
And outside, in the world now ruled by darkness and charm and blood and songâŠ
Regulus Arcturus Black was smiling.
And the Order of the Phoenix had never been more afraid.
It began at dawn.
The first curse struck like a crack of thunder in the middle of a sleepy, grey sky. Then another. Then a dozen. Then a storm.
Shields cracked. Pavement split. Shops erupted in fire and ash as both sides flooded the cobblestonesâblack-robed Death Eaters slamming into the Order of the Phoenix like tidal waves of magic and rage. The streets were war. The buildings were crumbling. The world was watching.
The Ministry was no more. Neutrality was dead. Now came the last battle for hearts, for minds, for control of the magical world itself.
The Order fought back with all they hadâDumbledore leading from the front, golden sparks flying from his wand as he deflected curse after curse. Moody barked orders. Lily Potter shielded fallen fighters. James dove through chaos, dueling three at once. Sirius was a blur of black and teeth and fury, screaming through the fight.
But the Death Eaters⊠had changed.
They were faster. Smarter. More precise. Coordinated like never before.
And now the Order knew why.
âTHERE!â someone shouted.
And heads turned.
Regulus Black had entered the battle.
And he wasnât walking.
He tore through the battlefieldâspinning, flipping, carving a path with wandless spells and brutal precision. He moved like a storm: lithe and untouchable, his sheer crimson robes trailing behind him like fire. Curses bounced off magical barriers cast by instinct. He disarmed five at once with a flick of his fingers and knocked a squad of Aurors flat with a burst of wind sharp as blades.
âThatâs not possible,â Emmeline Vance whispered. âThat canât beââ
âHeâs just a boyââ
âHeâs winning.â
The Order rallied to capture him. Remus, Dorcas, and Marlene flanked from the side, spells ready.
âREGULUS BLACK!â Moody roared. âSURRENDER!â
But Regulus just turnedâeyes glowing with bound magic, the sigil on his collar pulsing blackâand smirked.
He vanished in a blur of crimson.
And appeared behind them.
He took Dorcas down with a trip and flip, wrestled Marlene mid-air, and spun Remus away with a whirl of wind. His bare feet skidded across ash and rubble as he leapt to a rooftop, cloak flying.
The Order faltered.
And from the crowd emerged Tom Riddle.
His expression was pure fury.
He stormed through curses and screams like a storm, hand outstretched, magic curling around his arm. When he reached Regulusâbloodied, panting, still grinningâhe grabbed him bodily, arms locking around the smaller wizardâs waist.
âYouâre mine,â Riddle growled.
And he lifted him.
The crowd gawked as the Dark Lord carried the heir of the House of Black off the battlefield like some ancient war prize. Regulus didnât resist. He clungâlaughing breathlessly, arms tight around Riddleâs neck as if nothing else mattered.
Tom Riddle landed in the center of the square, right across from Albus Dumbledore.
And the world went silent.
The crowd watched. Fighters stopped. The air was poised.
Two giants of ideology. Power incarnate.
Facing each other with everything on the line.
âYouâre desperate,â Dumbledore said calmly. âTo parade him around like a trophy.â
âOh, Albus,â Riddle chuckled darkly, setting Regulus gently at his side. âYou really donât understand anything.â
The crowd stirred.
Dumbledore stepped forward, raising his voice. âThis warâthis chaosâhas cost too many lives. The public still has a choice. A better path. There is still a futureââ
âWow,â Tom interrupted loudly, voice echoing. âSuper scary.â
He took a few lazy steps forward.
âI see why they give you such a big hat.â
A few chuckles from the edges of the crowd.
âQuick thing, though,â he continued, louder now. âItâs curious you stopped by to fight me nail and toothâwhen all I really mean to try⊠is to dispense a dose of truth.â
Murmurs.
Regulus stepped up beside him, eyes burning.
Tom spread his arms.
âWe Wizards donât need suppression. We need an uprising. A different kind of despot, bringing respite from puritan demands.â
Some in the crowd stirred, uncertain.
âA new order. Like what Grindelwald promisedâ He knew we could be great. And we can make the magical world great again.â
Gasps. Whispers. The international press snapped photos.
âJust imagine if we flipped the script. Took the fight into the light. Made them beg. Made them pray. What would happen if we ran the ship?â
He grinned viciously.
âHoist the mainsailâpaint the decksââ
âAye-aye!â shouted the Death Eaters.
âHave a crewmate to protect,â he purred, brushing a hand down Regulusâs arm. âBecause they want us divided. Thatâs how they keep us down.â
The crowd leaned in.
âBut we got the guts. We got the chutzpah. We got the means to seize the crown.â
He pointed directly at the press.
âIf youâre not fuckinâ stupid, then youâve only got one choiceâ Me. Voldemort. The Peopleâs Voice.â
Cheering broke out in pockets. Then more.
âPicture it. We escape this hole. Never live in fear of magicâs toll. Wizards could save their soulsâ Not by hiding, but by taking control.â
Dumbledore raised his wandââThatâs enoughâ!â
Tom laughed.
âThey say the magical worldâs too populated. Thatâs why they exterminate. But we got the numbers. We got the thunder. Letâs annex their real estate.â
âDonât listen to him!â Albus shouted. âThis is madness!â
âIf you wanna see a new worldâraise your fist and make some noise!â Tom roared.
âHAIL VOLDEMORT, THE PEOPLEâS VOICE!â the crowd screamed.
Magic exploded around them in pure noise.
âManifest destiny,â he snarled, âLong as you invest in me. The restâll fall into place.â
âMeanwhile, this king thinks all of us peasants Should be satisfied with suffering.â
Albus stepped forwardââWait. Hold onââ
âTell me, peopleâare you satisfied?â Tom shouted. Then, with venom, âYour lover knew it was wrong, Albus. Maybe thatâs why heâs not around anymore.â
âYOU MOUTHY LITTLEââ Albusâs wand lit.
Tom smirked.
âHere it comes. Smite me. Silence me. Thatâs all you hypocrites know how to do.â
He turned to the crowd.
âYou wonât do it. Youâre weak. They didnât banish you, Albus. They restrained your power. Chained you down here.
I got no chains on me.â
He held his arms open wide.
âWHOâS WITH ME?â
And then it happened.
The crowd surged.
âLETâS UNITE AND FIGHT FOR A BRAND NEW REALM!â âONE NATION UNDER VOLDEMORT!â âHAPPY DAYS ARE NIGH WITH OUR LORD AT THE HELM!â
The square roared. Magic cracked the sky.
âFUTUREâS NEVER TASTED SWEETER, THANKS TO OUR CHARMING LEADERâ EVERY WIZARD CAN BE A WINNERâ LETâS TAKE OUR FATES TO THEIR WORLDâ WE CAN HAVE THE KEYS IF WE TRUST VOLDEMORTâ GIVE APPLAUSEâTHE MAGICAL WORLD HAS CAUSE TO REJOICEâ HAIL VOLDEMORT, THE PEOPLEâS VOICE!â
The Order could not compete.
They were drowned in voices. In chants. In spells. In fear.
The crowd turned on them.
And Dumbledore made the call.
âFall back,â he whispered.
âEveryoneâfall back!â
Sirius pulled James away. Lily screamed for Remus. Marlene covered Dorcas. Albus shielded the retreat.
Tom watched them go, smug, victorious, one hand around Regulusâs waist, the other raised to the cheering masses.
Regulus leaned in.
âDid I do good?â he whispered.
Tom kissed his temple.
âYou won me the world.â
And the magical world cheered for the man they once fearedâand now followed.
Hail Voldemort. The Peopleâs Voice.
There werenât enough beds anymore.
There werenât enough fighters. Not enough blood to spare. Not enough plans that didnât end in smoke.
The Order was in ruins.
Their headquarters had gone silent after the retreat. People limped through the corridors, eyes dull, robes torn. Healing spells flickered and failed over cracked ribs and shattered minds. Benjy was gone. Dorcas was missing. Marlene had taken a curse meant for Moody. James had a split down his shoulder that wouldnât stop bleeding.
And worst of all: they had no momentum.
They had no hope.
Because the public had chosen Voldemort.
Because Regulus Blackâdead, defected, dazzlingâhad danced on that stage, and they had clapped.
He was the face of the new world.
And now he had to be taken out.
âIf we donât pull him from the field,â Dumbledore said, âthen we lose the war. He is the spine of their movement. The flame. Without himâŠâ
Sirius stood in the doorway, silent and pale.
âIf we can get him,â Remus said quietly, âwe might be able to get Tom, too.â
No one dared speak the obvious:
That without Regulus, Voldemort might break.
Somewhere Else â Riddle Manor
The bedroom was all black marble and velvet, charmed to flicker in candlelight that never burned out. Silk sheets. Hanging veils. A glass balcony overlooking a forest that screamed at night. It was silent now, save for pacing footsteps and the hiss of a brushing comb.
Tom Riddle paced like a man on fire.
âMulciber botched the extraction,â he snapped. âAgain. That idiot Travers let the Irish delegation slip. Rosierâs bleeding somewhere in France, I think, and Snape is still harping on about new potion funding like we havenât just conquered half of Europeââ
From the adjoining bathroom, Regulusâs voice floated out, muffled but amused.
âYou sound sexy when youâre unhinged.â
Tom groaned. âNot now, Regulus. Iâm serious. We need to clean house. Replace half the council. Maybe execute a few. Make a statement.â
Regulus hummed, running fingers through his hair. âYou say that every week.â
âThis time I mean it.â
âYou always mean it.â
Tom stopped in front of the mirror, chest rising with frustration. âIâm trying to keep this war from slipping out of my hands.â
âThen maybe take your hands off it for one night.â
âI canât,â Tom snapped. âYouâre not hearing me. Iâ"
The bathroom door opened with a soft click.
And the world stopped.
Regulus stepped into the room wearing next to nothingâjust wine-red silk, slashed lace, skin gleaming under candlelight. The lingerie was high-cut and sheer, clinging in all the right places. Straps wrapped low around his hips and kissed high over his thighs. Gold chains sparkled around his waist. His hair was tousled and perfect. His eyesâburning.
Tomâs mouth went dry.
Regulus tilted his head.
âShut up,â he said sweetly. âYou know that I love you.â
Tom blinked, words dying in his throat.
âBut thatâs enough of this spiral,â Regulus cooed, crossing the room with slow, rolling hips. âSome of your goals havenât come true. Fine. So hereâs how weâll break the cycle.â
He took Tomâs hand. Lifted it. Placed it on his waist.
âYour hand, my hand... your body and mine...â âThey can withstand the firinâ line.â
He leaned in, lips brushing Tomâs ear.
ââCause anyone who finds love in Hell⊠can do anything, baby.â âYou and me donât need no one else⊠to make it through the crazy.â
Tom inhaled sharply as Regulus straddled his lap, pushing him back onto the edge of the bed.
âNo blow comes close to fatal for this prince and fallen godâŠâ âWe already found love in Hellâthe rest is easy, baby.â
Tom groaned, gripping his hips tightly. âI appreciate all that, butââ
Regulus shushed him with a finger to the lips.
âWeâll get through it.â
âBut we need our allies to come backââ
âWe can do it.â
Tom closed his eyes, forehead pressing to Regulusâs collarbone. âYouâre my pillar. My heartâs fulfiller. But thereâs no way this liningâs silver. Everyoneâs gone. Weâre facing a war. We canât get in touch with anyone anymore, andââ
âShut up,â Regulus whispered again, pulling him back to look him in the eye.
âYou know that I love you.â âBut youâre forgettinâ who we are.â
He kissed Tomâslow, then sharp.
âIn a pit that doesnât let sun through⊠somehow we managed to see stars.â
Tom growled and flipped him onto the bed.
Regulus giggledâan actual giggle, breathy and wickedâand dragged Tom down with him under the covers, hands wandering, mouths meeting, legs tangled.
âIâm going to destroy you,â Tom muttered against his throat, voice low and wrecked.
âYou always say that,â Regulus gasped, nails scraping down Tomâs back.
Tom groaned, grinding against him, hands everywhere. âYou're right. This can wait. This is more important.â
âYouâre so easy.â
âYouâre unfair.â He kissed down his chest. âYou look like this and expect me to focus?â
âI expect you to fuck me.â
âOh, believe me, darling,â Tom hissed, eyes glowing. âI will.â
The war outside thundered on. But inside, the gods of this new world tangled themselves in silk and darknessâ And forgot the rest.
A Ruined Farmhouse â West Yorkshire Countryside Three Days After the Fall of Exeter
The night had been brutal.
Half the Death Eater squad sent to Exeter was slaughtered. The safehouse was compromised, the artifacts lost, and the ambassador Regulus was meant to charm into alliance had been assassinated before he could so much as bat his lashes.
So now, Regulus was alone. Again.
He moved like shadow through the wreckage, high boots crunching glass, one sleeve torn, his lip split in a way that added to his ever-present allure rather than detracted from it. A soft silk sash trailed behind him, the wind catching it like a banner.
He was here to clean up the mess. Because no one else could be trusted to fix what was broken.
âHonestly,â Regulus muttered to himself, casting an advanced tracking spell with a flick of his fingers, âI leave you idiots alone for two days and you already turn the whole mission into a bloody pissing contestââ
But the spell never finished.
He didnât hear them coming.
Too many of them. Too many shields. Too many distractions. A dozen spells hit all at once.
The last thing Regulus saw was a streak of green across the sky.
And thenâ
Black.
He woke to rope burns and a blinding headache.
And⊠déjà vu?
Regulus blinked slowly, lashes fluttering, head pounding. His wrists were bound to the arms of a chair. Tight. Familiar. So familiar.
He looked aroundâdim room, cracked plaster walls, candlelight flickering from sconces. The room was cold. Voices hummed nearby.
Where
And then it hit him.
âIâm going to fucking kill someone,â he muttered, yanking at the restraints.
The door opened.
And the Order of the Phoenix walked in.
There was Sirius Blackâolder, unshaven, furious. James and Lily. Dorcas Meadowes. Remus. Moody. Marlene. A dozen more, most of them pale and wary, all of them staring like he was something ancient and diseased.
"Well, this is cozy," Regulus drawled, cocking his head. "Is this the part where you weep and beg me to switch sides because Iâm so pretty?"
James made a strangled sound.
Moody stepped forward, wand raised. âWhat was the last Death Eater mission you completed?â
Regulus smirked. Stayed silent.
âWhoâs controlling your operations?â
Regulus rolled his eyes.
âWho gave you the order to seduce the Dutch Minister?â
Regulus leaned forward as much as the chair would let him.
And spat at Moodyâs feet.
Sirius lunged.
âENOUGH!â
He stormed across the room, grabbing Regulus by the front of his ridiculous satin-stitched top. His voice cracked.
âThis is not who you are.â
Regulus raised a brow, unbothered. âYouâre lucky this chair has me tied down, Sirius, or Iâd teach you what I am.â
âYou were my baby brother,â Sirius said, voice shaking. âYou used to follow me around in the garden. You stole Mumâs wand and blew up a doily. You cried when I left for Hogwartsââ
âCute,â Regulus sneered. âMaybe you shouldâve stayed gone.â
But Sirius didnât let go.
He just stared.
And for a split second, Regulus blinkedâand his eyes glazed over.
Like a ripple across glass.
Thenâ
He snapped back.
âAre you done blubbering?â
They all saw it.
Dorcas stepped forward carefully. âTalk to him again.â
âWhat?â
âAbout before. When you were kids.â
Sirius frowned, but nodded. âYou used to sing to yourself at night, in that tiny voice. You were scared of the dark, but you never admitted it. You carried your star chart around like it was goldââ
Again, Regulusâs eyes glazed. This time for longer.
Then he flinched, shaking his head hard.
âShut the fuck up, Padfoot. You donât know anything.â
Now they were all staring.
Dorcas stepped up, voice soft. âReg⊠we were friends at Hogwarts, remember? You and me and Barty and Evan sneaking into the kitchens? You made me hex a teacherâs wig off for slipping you a detention.â
Another flicker.
Glassy eyes. Shaky breath.
Then rage. âYouâre all pathetic.â
Remus turned to Lily. âDiagnostic spells. Now.â
She nodded, launching a flurry of charmwork. Lights flickered. Runes shimmered over Regulusâs bodyâblurry, distorted, like they couldnât quite focus.
âThereâs something there,â she whispered. âItâs buried deep. I canât tell what it is.â
They tried again. And again. Memory probes. Countercurses. Healing charms. Even a mild Obliviate reversal.
Untilâ
One spell slipped through by accident.
A diagnostic-memory trace combined with a deep clarity charm. No one even cast it on purpose. It shimmeredâand thenâ
Regulusâs whole body went still.
Eyes wide.
Lips parted.
And thenâhe collapsed.
Not unconsciousâjust limp, panting, sweat slick on his forehead, trembling like something had just cracked.
Sirius was at his side instantly. âRegâReggie?â
Regulus opened his eyes.
Blinking.
And blinking again.
Confused.
ââŠwhereâŠ?â
He looked around. His voice was rough and soft and real.
ââŠWhy am I here?â
Everyone held their breath.
âIâŠâ Regulus looked down at his hands. âWhy the fuck am I wearing this?â
James muttered, âHeâs back.â
âBack?â Regulus frowned. âWhat do you mean âbackâ? I was justâI was just in the cave.â
Silence.
Regulus looked around the room, expression twisting. âRiddle had me. HeâI took the locket. I drank the potion. The Inferi dragged me under. Then heâhe saved me. OrâI thought he did. He was ranting. He tied me to a chair. I wasâmocking him. Laughing. I remember that. And thenâŠâ
He paused.
Everyone leaned in.
Regulusâs voice dropped. âAnd then⊠there was this mist. It sprayed in my face.â
Gasps.
âOh my god,â Lily whispered. âHe was brainwashed.â
âHeâs had weeks of memory loss,â Remus said, horrified.
âWait,â Dorcas interrupted. âYou defected? You left the Death Eaters?â
Regulus blinked, annoyed. âObviously. I was trying to destroy the fucking horcruxes.â
Dead silence.
Sirius choked. âHorcruxes?â
Regulus tilted his head like they were all morons. âVoldemort made horcruxes. You didnât know?â
âNo one knew,â Dumbledore said grimly from the doorway, face pale.
Regulus sighed, like this was the most inconvenient thing in the world.
âBrilliant. So I nearly died alone in a zombie cave for nothing.â
And then he looked around.
âOkay, seriously. Someone get me normal clothes. And a fucking cup of tea. I'm exhausted, I look like a slut, and apparently I missed a month-long breakdown.â
Everyone just kept staring.
Even now, no oneânot even Regulusâknew how close the world had come to ending.
But for now, at least, he was back.
And everything was about to change.
The room was still reeling from the return of Regulus Arcturus Black.
He sat curled up in an armchair like heâd fused with it, one leg hooked over the armrest, clutching a blanket like it might fend off the entire war. Someone had finally given him proper clothesâa pair of Jamesâs sweatpants and a too-big Gryffindor jumper, which he wore like a funeral robe.
His hair was a mess. His face was pale. His expression oscillated wildly between confusion, denial, and outrage.
And across from him, the entire Order of the Phoenix sat around the drawing room in stunned silence as he finished explaining.
âSo,â Regulus said dramatically, gesturing with a biscuit like it was a wand, âI defected, destroyed one of Voldemortâs horcruxes, died, got resurrected by the perverted Dark Lord himself, was brainwashed, and apparently married off like some veela courtesan in silk lingerie while being used to commit war crimes with my arse.â He paused. âDid I miss anything?â
Dead silence.
ââŠNo,â Lily finally whispered. âThat⊠about covers it.â
Regulus threw his hands up. âSick.â
Sirius was gripping the edge of the table so hard his knuckles were white. âYouâyou did all of that alone?â
âWell, I had Kreacher,â Regulus muttered. âSort of. He took the fake locket and I told him to leave me. I was ready to die.â His voice cracked a little. âAnd then he came. Riddle. Saved me. Orâwhatever he thought he was doing.â
âHe kidnapped you,â Remus said gently. âYou were vulnerable. Your magic wouldâve beenââ
ââdrained, yeah,â Regulus muttered. âThatâs the weird part. It still is. I can feel how little of my core I can access, and my Black family magicâitâs like itâs⊠missing.â
Everyone went still again.
Then James slowly turned to Dumbledore, face pale. âHe said he married him, didnât he?â
Regulus blinked. âHe WHAT?â
Everyone turned back.
âIâm sorryââ Regulus sat bolt upright. âI MARRIED HIM?!â
They all nodded, grim.
âTO HIM?!â Regulus shrieked. âTO TOM FUCKING RIDDLE?! HEâS FIFTY! HEâS OLDER THAN MY DAD!â
âYou donât remember?â Dorcas asked gently.
Regulusâs entire soul left his body.
âNO, I DONâT REMEMBER! I DON'T WANT TO REMEMBER!â
Lily put a hand on his arm, but Regulus had entered full meltdown mode.
âIS THAT WHY MY MAGICâS FUCKED?!â he wailed. âHE TIED ME TO HIM WITH BLOOD MAGIC?! THATâS WHY I CANâT ACCESS MY FAMILIAL POWER?! HE BLOOD-BOUND ME LIKE A BRIDE?! A BRIDE?!â
And thatâs when it hit.
He gasped.
He gasped, and his whole body seized. His eyes went wideâtoo wideâand he let out a horrible little hiccup of a noise, then made a full-body twitch andâ
âOH MY FUCKING GODââ
âRegâ?â Sirius stood up, alarmed.
âOH MY FUCKING GOD, I REMEMBERED SOMETHINGââ
âWhat is it?â James asked.
Regulus screamed.
Not like a dramatic, posh-boy scream. Like a real one. A from-the-guts, end-of-the-world, burn-my-eyes-out sort of scream.
âNO NO NO NOâ I REMEMBERâWEâWEâUNDER THE COVERSâ HEâ OH MY GOD OH MY FUCKING GODââ
He leapt from the chair and began running in circles.
Literal, actual circles.
âI HAD SEX WITH VOLDEMORT OH MY GODââ
Everyone sat frozen.
No one could breathe.
Remus made the sign of the cross even though he was not Catholic.
âI TOUCHED HIMâI RODE HIM?! NOâNOâ OH MY FUCKING STARSââ
âOkay, heâs spiraling,â Marlene said weakly.
Dorcas stood and tried to intercept him.
Regulus shoved past her and continued pacing like a cursed metronome.
âNOâTHATâS ILLEGALâIâM EIGHTEENââ
James actually gagged.
âI WORE SILK AND BELLSâHE PUT HIS HAND BETWEEN MY THIGHSââ
âI NEED TO LIE DOWN,â Peter moaned from the corner.
Regulus suddenly froze.
He was staring at Peter.
ââŠWhy the fuck are you here?â Regulus asked coldly.
Peter blinked. âWhat?â
âYouâre a Death Eater.â
Everyone turned slowly.
Peterâs eyes widened. âN-no Iâm notââ
âYes you are.â Regulusâs voice was sharp now, cutting through the noise. âYou took the mark before I defected. You werenât high up, you were shit, but you were there. You were one of them.â
Peter looked around, stammering.
Siriusâs face hardened. âPeteâŠâ
âIâIâHeâs confused! He doesnât know what heâs sayingâ!â
âIâM THE ONE WHO GOT BRAINWASHED,â Regulus screamed. âNOT AMNESIA.â
Peter bolted.
James and Sirius chased him.
Regulus collapsed back into the chair, heaving.
Everyone else was still staring.
And then Regulus groaned and pulled the blanket over his head.
âDonât talk to me. Ever again. I need to erase my whole soul.â
Lily looked at Dumbledore.
âWhat do we do?â
Regulusâs voice came from beneath the blanket.
âYou fix me, and then you kill him, and then you burn this whole outfit, and then you send me to therapy for the rest of my natural life.â
Sirius stormed back in. âWeâve got Pettigrew.â
Regulus peeked out. âCool. Can you get me next?â
And they all realized:
Regulus Arcturus BlackâHorcrux hunter. Brainwashed war consort. Sexually traumatized magical twink in borrowed Gryffindor pyjamasâ
Was back.
And hell was about to follow.
