Trying to figure out what to do with Gabriel and Beelzebub in this fic. Started it before s2 and abandoned it after you-know-what, so I never plotted for the idea that they'd hook up. There are no seeds of it planted in the rest of the series, and none of it would really make sense, especially as at the end of Divine Misconceptions Aziraphale clocks Gabriel as unable to sense love like all the other angels. In the whole series, actually, Gabriel exists as the horrible boss joke he is at the end of s1. He's a meathead bully with impeccable colour sense and the social skills of a squeegee. He's there to be shat on, overcome, and threatened with an affordable-but-surprisingly-powerful vaccum cleaner.
And you know what? I'm fine with that. I have no deep attachment to 'Jim', and actually the whole Jim storyline felt off to me. It felt unearned and dragged out, and it would have been absolutely fine if it meant something in the end, but it didn't, did it? Beez and Gabriel and their season long plot towards a happy ending got jettisoned along with everything else.
In retrospect I also really really hate all that twee dialogue Gaiman wrote for the amnesiac Jim, because it reads a whole lot like the performative whimsical-goth-uncle shit that he used to post on social media. Which, I admit, I could almost find charming in a pinch.
Until we all found out what the fucker was really up to, and then there wasn't enough vomit in the universe.
I don't know. I have to do something with Gabriel, and I have a vague idea what, but it has to be something that speaks to his shallowness and disconnection, not just writing him a whole new character for the hell of it. It has to make sense. You know. That thing that fiction is supposed to do.
