Ad astra is a very hopeful metaphor for depression and I am very grateful for this. At the begining of the movie, Roy confess he can't feel anything. But yet, he is still abble to survive and function very well at his work. He initial mission is just to record a message to his so called dead hero father. As much as it hurts, Roy take this as an oportunity to find his father and confronting him. After get completely alone in the space and almost lost his own mind and hope, Roy succeds at this: he finds closure and let all the pain among his father go. Then he has to decide: easily die or fight to life. Roy choses the last one. So all by himself, he finds his way home, where he finally accepts the help he needs and opens up to others, finally wanting to fully live his life. In Roy's last record, you can hear a bit of fear, incertain, but must important: hope and emotions. And that is like to choose to heal. Its is lonely, like being the only person in the universe. It is hard, like cross the entire galaxy. You will almost give up in the way. And you have to do it all by yourself untill the very moment you are ready to came back home.
