SHUT UP FUTURE PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD KIM NAMJOON DO NOT TELL ME THAT YOU’VE BEEN TO THE TATE MODERN’S MARK ROTHKO ROOM WHICH HOUSES HIS INFAMOUS SEAGRAM MURALS WHICH HE MADE FOR THE FOUR SEASONS IN NY THEN REFUSED TO GIVE TO THEM BECAUSE HE KNEW THEY WOULDN’T APPRECIATE IT?!?!?!?

ME TOO KIM NAMJOON LOVE OF MY LIFE I DID TOO!!!! ITS FUCKING BEAUTIFUL!!! ITS SO PAINFUL AND RAW AND LOVELY AND THICK AND DEEP AND EMOTIONAL. GOD I LOVE THAT ROOM.

THE ROTHKO ROOM AT THE TATE MODERN, LONDON: 

From the Tate website:

The chapel-like room in which these large paintings were hung was painted grey in accordance with the artist’s wishes; the lighting was strategically dimmed, creating a sombre, meditative atmosphere. Visitors to the room tended to linger; they observed the paintings with rapt attention, moving around, away from and towards individual canvases in an attempt to see more clearly. Sometimes they sat and closed their eyes; they may have been trying to adjust their vision to the relative darkness of the room, they may have been thinking about their lives or they may have been praying.

So one interesting thing about the Seagram display is that the Rothko room is one of the only places in the entire gallery where the lighting is altered - dimmed specifically to his specifications. The room is off the main track as well so you have to go into it, and because of the dimmed lighting the red paint almost glows...like big beating hearts. Rothko really knew what he was doing, and I love him making such a demand of the gallery.
