it's always been strange to me when warrior/soldier characters act all lone-wolf "i dont need anyone" because thats pretty much the one sure fire way to get yourself killed. there's simply NO WAY around working with others in these contexts. sure, in others, like a higher up giving you a specific command and the intel department getting you what you need it might work (although youre still working with people, just not out on the field) but if youre in enemy territory where nowhere is considered safe and you dont even have an idea of the third-party threat's (that youre hear to get rid of) resources, plans, etc, you need to work with your teammates in order to get at least a sliver of insight as to how to do your job better or right at all. i dont know if im making sense here.
exactly!!! This was exactly what I was trying to communicate!!
that pride in your own abilities turns to arrogance and inability to work with others which becomes stupidity that gets you fucking killed. It gets others killed.
as a soldier, and especially as a bodyguard on a team, you do not have the privilege or the luxury of being solitary. A good solider can collaborate and work with others. A good fighter understands strength comes from multiple perspectives and minds dedicated to the same goal. A good bodyguard understands they are not fool proof or perfect.
I also feel (and this may just be me) that Bo has been done a disservice by being so one-dimensional in the way he’s written. The reason I didn’t enjoy his character when reading was not because he was a rude ogre, not because he didn’t like the main character, not because he was unpleasant to be around. It was because that was all he was. He doesn’t have any personality outside of being a tough soldier unsatisfied with his position believing himself to be the most capable person there because he’s trained and is strong.
What does he want? The throne eventually, which he’d get through violence. But he would be so much more interesting if he wanted to become a new kind of King, the kind who thinks flexible and knows others have something to offer. Who wants to bring about security and change for his people.
But right now all I see when I read about him is a creature whose only ever used for violence in stories fitting the cliche
five things I want in keeper 9
(contains legacy spoilers)
linh to talk about her visit to choralmere
to know if Prentice will still be relevant
sandor and Grizel moments bc they my otp
ro and Bo interactions
whoever is going to fill in for Nubiti to be just as cool as her
it's so silly that keefe guessed what happened between bo and ro, but it was sort of played off as a joke
Thoughts on Bo?
I have several, nonsie
his attitude as a solider infuriates me to no end, just “hnnng strength gotta be strong I don’t work with others” and all that. It’s a defining character trait and attitude but after a certain point it just becomes arrogance and an inability to perform his job and improve
if he can’t accept that his position requires collaboration then he won’t be able to be an effective bodyguard or solider in general
at first it was just “hmm I’m an ogre surrounded by people who hate me but I’ll be secure in my beliefs” which is perfectly fine, but I now find myself annoyed when he speaks a lot of the time. I don’t have any quotes off the top of my head but there are multiple scenes where he shows off his strength like it’s a solution to everything. Like see, I’m strong, that’s means i know what im doing.
this has gotten kind of ranty instead of analyzing, oops.
As a character he feels flat and unexplored, stuck in one mindset and serving to create drama with the other bodyguards. I’d like to see an ogre who can be flexible and work with others in a way where they don’t use their strength as their one ability.
essentially: I think he has a lot of potential that is currently being wasted, but I’d like to reread more to talk about him more thoroughly
