The second story is Bootknife, by Stephanie Shaver. This is another story about the eternally suffering Herald Wil, as he escorts both his daughter Ivy and the Bardic traitor Carris to his father’s place to hide from the assassins of Lord Dark (seriously dude, get a new pseudonym). This is a fairly entertaining story, with an absolutely perfect line at one point:
Wil picked up a spare chicken pie, leaving the last two apple ones on the table. He’d give Carris dinner but no dessert. Traitors didn’t get dessert.
So there’s the moral of this story: don’t do treason, kids. It leads to permanent revocation of dessert, and you’ll have nobody to blame but yourself.
But besides that this story also has a very entertaining character, a Herald Assassin who apparently answers to Alberich, whose name is never given. So Wil nicknames him Bootknife, and his (male) Companion Sashay. Bootknife finds this funny. Honestly Bootknife is kind of an awesome character. Sadly though he does not survive this story, dying from the backlash when Sashay takes a Molotov Cocktail (apparently a new weapon in Valdemar, I wonder what they’re gonna end up naming it?) to the chest. Which is admittedly a pretty spectacular way to go, but it still sucks that the best character in this story died.

Starting to hone the handle shapes on these two- both are different styles and with very different materials that require different strategies to cut.
