I want to introduce a #bookofweek on my page! Reclaiming Our Space by @feministajones is the first because it’s one of my absolute favorites! Shout out to @ashields98 for getting me a signed copy!!! Reclaiming Our Space tells the story of modern Black Feminism. Jones has a clear thesis: she argues that Black Feminism is the key to Black liberation at the beginning of the book, and weaves a visceral story of how Black women have used the internet to modernize political organization and bring socioeconomic discussions of society from academia into an accessible modern format. We would not have the activist internet that we have today if it weren’t for Black feminists, and this book gives them some of the credit that they sorely deserve. I would not be the advocate and activist today without the internet. I grew up around many conservative people, but for the past 9 years (today was actually my anniversary, eek) on Twitter, largely with the help of Feminista Jones, who I’ve followed nearly since the beginning, I’ve learned how to deconstruct the colonial ideas I was raised on and look at the world from a more accurate point of view and to always consider the effects of policy on the people who get left behind by progress because they are who matter most. I grew up white and privileged and I am so thankful to people like Feminista Jones who have taught me to learn to always consider my privilege and and my place in the world. Books like this, where Jones tell the story of Black Feminism, exist so that we (we being white people or just in general people who don’t know these things already) don’t have to ask others to explain them directly in the internet. That’s a waste of their time and honestly disrespectful. I shared this book so that others can read it, not to retell the story she tells. It’s not mine to tell. It is important to read these stories of the foundation of activism in which we participate, and use our newfound knowledge to become better allies and advocates than we were yesterday. ✌️ -Al #internetactivism #activism #blacklivesmatter #reclaimingourspace #disabled #disabledandqueer #feminism #heds #privilege #blackfeminism #womanism https://www.instagram.com/p/CMzjaf4nnAI/?igshid=1ma6g8rgjnlh2
