Today a young lady came to the reference desk and said that she had just missed her pickup deadline, could I help her find the book she’d ordered, since it had already been put back on the shelf? Well of course I could! We looked it up in the catalog and it said it was in “reshelving” status, but I had a hunch and decided to check in the stacks first. I gave her a cursory explanation of how the adult floor is organized as we walked to the biography section, then I scanned to the spot where the book should be and, lo and behold, there it was! The patron let out a little squeal of joy and exclaimed, “librarians are magical!”, clapping delightedly. I laughed and said “if I were, I’d be able to just snap and the book would show up in my hand!” She replied with “you basically just did that!” and thanked me profusely, hugging her book as she walked towards the lobby to check out.
