What if we buy the book but also find a pirated copy to access an exclusive chapter that isn't available where we live? (Barnes and Noble). Is that okay?
Hi, first I want to say thank you for asking, because I know it would be easier to just do it and “just not think about it”. That being said, I think doing this still gives the pirating sites space. It still gives them a platform to steal. In a rapidly shrinking market, authors really need all the help they can get.
I will do research over the next couple days to hopefully find an alternative that will suit you — because you do present an interesting dilemma! I know I have been spoiled growing up in local indie bookstores and libraries, and it is harder for people in different countries.
Bottom line: don’t do it. Please don’t support these thieves!!
I’ll edit with what I find as to what to do instead.
remember: if you consciously decide to pirate a book when checking it out from a nearby library is a perfectly viable option, the extremely vengeful spirit of a library science graduate student (me) will physically manifest inside your home.
I thought I’d reblogged Stief’s post about the book pirating but Tumblr ate it, so instead I’ll just say this:
If your reaction to a book series coming out is “I’d rather die than pay for it” then.... It kinda sounds like you don’t actually want to read it?
Not wanting to buy a book because your budget is extremely tight and you don’t have the disposable income for it is one thing -- that’s legit, that’s when you go to a library or otherwise borrow it, no one’s arguing with that. But not wanting to pay for the book because you apparently?? hate?? the author or the series???? that’s.... no. You just don’t have to read it! You literally don’t have to read it.
hauscrashburn replied to your post “I bought my copies of the first 3 TRC books because I knew I’d like...”
Yes that's what's weird. Libraries and ebooks exist. I bought all of mine as ebooks. Awesome. Downloaded at midnight.
I don’t understand!!! How can anyone be unwilling to go to a library? I mean maybe I’m biased because I live in an area with high public library saturation, and I work in a high school library and can check out a lot of YA from there, but like.... Still! Still. Libraries!!!!

The top digital publishers in the world constantly petition Google to remove the Pirate Bay from the search results, but it is not happened yet. Penguin Random House, Kensington Publishing, Record
It is with deep regret that I share this ...
Due to pirating, and a very bad experience with a blog tour host who downloaded a digital copy of my book and shared it with other bloggers AGAINST my consent, that I must refuse any future free downloads in lieu of reviews.
This does not mean that I will not have giveaways from time-to-time for paperbacks.
Lovelies, I hope you know how much I heart emoticon you and appreciate you. Thank you for being my loyal friends, fans, and readers.
Books and Pirating
Look. I get it. Books are expensive.
And when authors on tumblr call you out for pirating, it hurts because these are people you look up to and admire. Nobody's perfect. Authors also make their mistakes too.
But you can't justify it. Not even one bit.
Common Reasons Given For Pirating Books:
1. The books are too expensive.
There is something called a library. Libraries are magical in that they let you borrow things for free. If your local branch does not have the book you can:
download the ebook legally off of their website.
ask the librarian to order it for you
order it from the library website
2. There's no time to head to a library
Okay then how are you reading? How do you have time to pick up a book, go through 200-300 pages, and make your opinion about it? Not an excuse.
3. Authors get more exposure through pirated books
And not a single penny for it. Authors need to make a living and if every individual collectively believes that another person is willing to pay for the book and therefore it's okay for them to pirate it, then absolutely nobody is going to buy it. Got it? Just because you alone are one person doesn't mean there aren't hundreds of others who are thinking the same thing.
4. I buy the book if I like it.
Great. Do you also only pay for your meal at a restaurant if you liked it? Again, you can sample books or borrow them from the library if you don't know what you're going to think.
5. I don't want to support the author (commonly known as Orson Scott Card Syndrome)
Borrow it or don't read it at all. Why do you want to perpetuate the ideas and thoughts of someone you loathe so much?
Bottom line--you're hurting authors and the very books you love by pirating. Know that it is wrong if you continue to do it, but don't try to justify it.
