Orientation Day 2
Unfortunately, Sunday proved to be extremely rainy so our group could not go on our scheduled hike on Mt. Tom. However, we still had a really fun day going to the Book Mill in Montague, MA and then getting ice cream at Herrell’s in downtown Noho. I’ve posted before about the Book Mill - it’s a used bookstore built in an old mill and is one of my favorite places in the area. I was really glad to have been able to take my first years to go explore it for a couple hours.

So let me tell you about this cool little place in my town. It's a collection of former mill buildings (about half of them are gone though) on a little River with three waterfalls in this little colonial town in western Massachusetts. The main building was built in 1834, with later additions. It currently houses the Alvah Stone restaurant, which provides locally sourced meals that are in season, and the Montague Book Mill, a used book store which is located on the second and third floors. To the left of the main building is a section which is now a cafe, called the Lady Killigrew. It features the kitchen and a bar on the first level, with stairs leading down to a lower level eating area. This area has big original mill windows which give a picturesque view of the river and waterfalls. There are also eating areas outside, and there are a couple paths which lead down to the river, which is shallow and calm, and very relaxing. Adjacent to these buildings is a third, smaller building which is now an art gallery filled with pieces from local artists, with everything for sale. There are paintings, sculptures, jewelry, all traditional and contemporary. In all, this spot is a great place to visit, and is simply beautiful. It is located just north of the village of Montague Center in Montague, Massachusetts. If you're ever in the western part of the state I highly recommend giving it a visit. (Luckily for me, it's only 5-10 minutes away)
Food Appreciation Friday!
Remember that cafe I told you about in my Book Mill post? This is it! The Lady Killigrew has some of the best sandwiches and teas in the valley. During the academic year, they often have a no-laptops policy in the cafe, which contributes to the calm atmosphere and is only aided by the relaxing sound of the falls, which you can see out the window. The last time I was there, I tried maple milk for the first time, because that seemed like most New England-y thing possible (it was sooooo good) paired with my peanut butter and nutella panini. Also, I usually don’t like cranberries but Aliza’s cranberry muffin was pretty dang good, too.
Ah the Book Mill. This converted mill houses a brilliant used book store (their slogan is “books you don’t need in a place you can’t find), a delicious cafe, a hip restaurant, an art and craft gallery, and an indie music store. Out in the middle of nowhere (aka near Deerfield and Sunderland -- which is where Mount Sugarloaf is, a great hike with an even better view at the top), the Book Mill is a Pioneer Valley favorite.
The Book Mill is a lovely place to spend an afternoon, studying and drinking tea over the sound of the falls. It’s a trek from Smith (about 40 minutes by car), but it’s so worth it, even if you don’t end up picking up any books (though I bought two paperbacks for my trip for less than $3 each!).
