Bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus)
These striking antelope are found in temperate grasslands of South Africa, Lesotho and Namibia. By the early 20th century they were almost driven to extinction, but thanks to conservation efforts, there are tens of thousands alive today. One subspecies, the blesbok, lives in the Highveld, a high-altitude grassland, while the other lives in the Cape Floral Region, a coastal region of high biodiversity and unique plants.
