over the course of the war, cody has started keeping a list : top ten situations that i don’t want to be in again. taking out an embankment of anti - aircraft turrets behind enemy lines by himself is high on that list, but not the top spot - point rain on geonosis, where his general lay wounded in a gunship crash across the battlefield while his remaining men slowly dwindled as the geonosians surrounded and picked them off in droves, was a respectable third place.
waking in an unfamiliar room, alone, save for the menacing cyborg in the corner, with no recollection of how he got there? it takes the cake.
a slow soldier is a dead soldier, and cody at least has the maneuverability to raise himself to his knees, crouched defensively with his hands balled into fists : he doesn’t need to look to know his blaster has been removed from his person, and he doesn’t really want to take his eyes off of the separatist general.
in his head, he takes stock of any bumps and bruises : there’s a faint trickle of blood he can feel making its way down his temple, but his body has all the regular aches of a post - battle adrenaline comedown. he’s still fighting fit and, though the odds are definitely not in his favour, that means he still has a fighting chance.
“grievous.” it’s snarled with contempt, and cody doesn’t deign to give him the respect befitting a general. all manners are off the table - it’s fight or flight and, given that the two are in a room together, cody is under no impression that grievous intends to let him leave. “had enough of getting your shebs handed to you by general kenobi?”

Though he’d been expecting someone to claim his rebirth, he hadn’t expected it to be Madara. Of all people in the world to keep him dead, surely it’d be the one he distrusted most -- the person who implanted the fail-safe Amaterasu to kill him had he spoken to Sasuke. Obviously it failed. “What do you want?” He asked blankly, “are you the one who brought me back? Why?”
