A friend linked me to your 15-page preview of SPARK and I have to say I really love the aesthetic! I hope your book pitch goes well. One thing I noticed is that all of the hero characters are girls. Will there be more boy characters in the full comic, or was making the Starlights an all-girl team a conscious design choice to appeal to the girl audience?
Thanks so much! The Starlights actually have one male hero—he’s the futuristic-looking cowboy in the short comic’s cover image. We didn’t have space to put him in the short comic (we already had plenty of characters!), but he’s the fifth member of the team: Boltslinger!
We specifically didn’t want the Starlights to be only women. Making the Starlights an all-female team might seem like a form of self-segregation, or, worse, a gimmick (“these ladies can fight just as well as any man!”). They’re not trying to prove anything, nor are they reacting to sexism in their field. Rather than being a deliberate challenge to other superhero teams that don’t have any women, they’re just a team that happens to have mostly women. If that makes sense.
We’ll do a bigger post about Bolt, his powers, and his personality eventually. Thanks again for the question!
